About Me

Jimmy has recorded and performed with some of the most important musicians in the fields of both Blues and Improvised music. These include blues legends: Willie Dixon, Little Milton, Luther Allison, Harvey Sorgen of Hot Tuna, John Cephas and Phil Wiggins, John Jackson, Rockin' Dopsie and several critically acclaimed recordings and performances with the Bluzblasters, Doug Newby and Frankie Lee. Also, he has performed and recorded with avant garde jazz pioneers: William Parker, Alvin Fielder of the AACM and Sun Ra, Michael Jefry Stevens, Herb Robertson, Joe Fonda, Paul Murphy, Joel Futterman and others. He has performed blues, jazz and improvised music at festivals, clubs, radio and television appearances in the USA and Europe. His influences range from the jazz styles of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, and Albert Ayler to the blues and rock styles of Rory Gallagher, Frank Marino, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins, Ritchie Blackmore, Shawn Lane, Terry Syrek and Carnatic musicians Prasanna Ramaswamy and U. Srinivas .Jimmy most recent project was as a member of the Rhythm Pigs, a southern rock-blues, jam band. The band included bassist Glen Foster (his old bandmate from The Bluzblasters), and Timmy Fodrey on drums & vocals. The Pigs were a perfect vehicle for Jimmy's varied musical explorations and their extended versions of originals and classic tunes give him plenty of room to stretch out. The band has occasionally added founding member and guitarist Dave Hlubek of Molly Hatchet and tours nationally as a Jagermeister sponsored Jager Band. Jimmy and Paul recently jammed the classic "Train, Train" with Jackson Spires and Greg T. Walker of Blackfoot.Regarding the jazz side of his career, although recently included in the new Baker's Jazz Encyclopedia by jazz scholar and John Coltrane biographer Lewis Porter, Jimmy has ceased performing avant garde, improvised jazz in public. After much consideration and soul-searching he came to the decision that despite some transcendent musical experiences with some great musicians, enduring the underlying hypocrisy and deceit of the scene was too high a price to pay. He still performs solo improvised music privately in his zonule but will not record or appear in public.Since 1988, Jimmy has taught guitar and improvisation privately and in the classroom. He is available for private lessons at his studio in Virginia Beach, VA, correspondence lessons and clinics. For more information please e-mail him at [email protected]

Band Members: What the critics say... "Williams is a subtle stylist and formidable ensemble player...content to jettison tangled and fragmented runs, or sly note bends and percussive plonks in counterpoint." Jon Morgan, Cadence One of the most refreshing voices on guitar today is Jimmy Williams. He has the talent and technique to ignite forest fires, and he brings a fresh spark of electricity to this session. His improvisations at times reflect the developmental construction of a piano player as he scurries forward with improvisatory logic. He sustains a fiercely burning flame with his aggressive runs, yet he conveys the sense of being totally in control at all times." Frank Rubolino, One Final Note " ...the musicians reveal an energetic spirit while bestowing new meaning to artistic expressionism...Williams bends and distorts his notes as if he were emulating an ecstatic or highly emotional human voice in accordance with Futterman’s circuitous and highly conversational clusters. The duo injects intersecting lines and sharp angles amid judicious sentiment and colorful vistas augmented by fierce intentions." Glen Astarita, All About Jazz "...with a pleasantly phlegmy distorted tone and a heavier investment in the blues...he emphasizes texture, inflection, note choice, and wit over sheer pyrotechnics." David Wayne, Jazz Weekly
