Before being diagnosed (dx) with ALS in October, 2006, I had a great career going on 13 years as a landscape architect. I specialized in designing parks (ballfields, passive recreation) and urban public places (plazas, streetscapes). Ironically, one of my areas of expertise was in complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to make sure public spaces were fully accessible to disabled persons. I think I am fairly atypical in that I moved on to accepting ALS immediately after my dx. I would rather not have ALS, but I have never seen that worrying does any good and I choose not to waste my remaining mobile days lamenting what I no longer can do. On the contrary, I accept my new challenges and take a great deal of satisfaction in adapting to my losses. I am currently working to help establish a first ever residence for people with ALS (pALS). It is my goal that this will be the first of many homes that will give hope to those who think death is preferable to life on a vent. Click HERE to read more.

or care for someone who does,
