My name is Roald Amundsen. I was born July 16, 1872 in Borge, Norway. I'm best known for being the first explorer to reach the geographic South Pole on December 14, 1911. It was a pretty big deal at the time. I formed a sleek, fast expedition using the healthiest of sled dogs and an intense will to succeed. When the expedition took off from Norway, everyone, my crew included, believed we were heading for the Arctic. They were pretty shocked to find out that my plan was to head down to Antarctica and race Captain Scott to the South Pole. Sir Scott is probably the best known Antarctic explorer, but he lost the race to the pole due to poor planning (choosing slow, clumsy ponies), an overloaded expedition and, subsequently, was found deceased on the ice with other members of his team; letters and expedition logs in hand should they be found.I met my fate in 1928 while in the Arctic working to rescue a French expedition (The Nobile) that was lost. There was some bad weather and our search plane crashed somewhere in the Barents Sea. Life was pretty good.RUN YOUR CURSOR OVER PHOTO FOR CAPTION!!
