Zera

About Me

"Zera is one of the rarest kinds of performers - a true singer. Few artists dare to perform a song strictly a Capella, more comfortable to lean on their musical backing. Instead, Zera is the opposite, her vocal delivery and emotional range leaves the music backing her just that, backing. Likened at times to Ricki Lee Jones, Jewel and Joni Mitchell, her intimate live shows leave the audience genuinely moved." - J.J. Slane. Little Room Records
Music has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember - my happiest childhood memories are of going to the various venues where my father played guitar and sang, listening in awe until I was finally old enough to join him on the stage.I began writing songs acapella in mid-primary school, performing original compositions with the local school choir and by the time I had reached high school, I had performed my songs in every fete and community function I could access.Since then, my musical journey has paralled my life. Finding the courage to 'come out' as a gay woman taught me much about life, love and expression and it has allowed my music to become free and reflective.Recently I have been working on networking, performing and increasing my skills and confidence as a solo performer. I have had the opportunity to jam and support some amazing artists and pick up many invaluable tips along the way. I am excited by the direction that my musical journey is taking.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.triplejunearthed.com/zera
Band Members: At present I am a solo act but am always ready to jam, perform and throw ideas around with other musicians. I am focusing on fine-tuning my material, looking to jam and experiment with strings, keys and rythym musicians.
Influences: I prefer 'inspiration' to 'influence'. I am inspired to write upon hearing a cascade of different artists and songs, but my style is true to me. Tori Amos, Missy Higgins, Melissa Etheridge are a few of my favourite artists, but I have grown up on and fallen in love with the likes of Paul Simon, The Beatles, Dolly Parton. I am inspired and influenced by every song I hear, both positively and negatively and I hope this never changes.
Sounds Like: I actually asked the audience at the Swan to answer this one for me...so here's what they said: Toni Childs, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, Dirty Lucy, Ricky Lee Jones, Jewel... my Grandmother?? (Thanks Dad)
