This band was once described by a Frederick, Maryland club owner as "not just another nightclub band but, rather, a full-blown concert act."
Cross-Tie Walker was one of the premier rock powerhouses of the Mid-Atlantic during the late 1980's and mid-1990's. The band released a self-sponsored EP in 1993 and sold over 3,000 copies of that album, "Get Cross-Tied" between 1993 and 1995. In 1991, Cross-Tie Walker, along with The Outlaws and the Road Ducks, headlined for a record crowd of over 110,000 at the Toy Run '91 concert at Ft. Smallwood State Park in Pasadena, MD.
Original Cross-Tie Walker members, Scott Poe (guitar/vocals), Kevin Young (bass, vocals) and Mark Ward (drums) are joined by Denis Mueller (guitar/vocals) of Port Deposit, Md. and Al Altano (guitar/bass/vocals) of Cockeysville, MD. Denis was the former lead guitarist for the disbanded group, "High Tides," and Al was the former bassist of the Christian rock group 7even (Seven) and served time as the bassist for Aaron Tippin, Travis Tritt and Eddie Rabbitt. Rounding out the project is head engineer, Scott Finkle, who previously served as manager and engineer for Confederate Railroad.Mike McLaughlin of the Laurel Leader once wrote "Then the band reformed last year and played their homecoming at Oliver's last February. It was my birthday, so Jackie and I stopped in for a drink and a listen. And let me tell you, the old trolley station hasn't rocked that much since it was moved sideways after the trolley service stopped."
In addition to great musicians, the band employs a professional road crew and engineering staff, some of whom have worked with Confederate Railroad, Toy Caldwell, Thin Ice, REO Speedwagon, David Bowie, Depeche Mode and others.
Cross-Tie Walker band members have shared the stage with many national acts such as: Savoy Brown, Dixie Allstars, Blackfoot, Foghat, Johnny Van Zant, Blackhawk, .38 Special, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, Toy Caldwell, Molly Hatchet, America, The Outlaws, Steppenwolf, Aaron Tippin, Travis Tritt, Eddie Rabbitt, Delbert McClinton, Tracey Wilson, Rap-Star Lorenzo, and many many other artists.

If you like good, solid classic rock from the '60s and '70s, with some R&B and Motown mixed in, mark Saturday, April 21 on your calendars. That's when the band Cross-Tie Walker returns to Oliver's Old Towne Tavern to play, starting at 9 p.m.
Cross-Tie Walker is not just a classic rock band, but also a classic Old Town band. Four of its six members graduated from Laurel High or Pallotti High. Those four, Scott Poe (guitar/ vocals), Jeff Baxter (vocals/guitar), Kevin Young (bass/vocals) and Mark Ward (drums), played together "before we had driver's licenses," according to Mark.
The other members of the band are Denis Mueller (guitar/vocals), and Scott Finkle, the band's engineer who currently lives in Laurel.
The band's first incarnation, Nightrider, played this area's high school dances and parties in the 1980s. After the name change, Cross-Tie Walker earned its chops touring the Mid-Atlantic as a big classic rock draw, sharing stages with Savoy Brown, Foghat, Marshall Tucker, Steppenwolf and other marquee groups renowned in the rock music industry. They put out a self-released album, "Get Cross-Tied," in 1993, then took a break in 1999.
During the seven-year hiatus they kept in close touch and all of the band members except Mark continued playing in other groups. Then the band reformed last year and played their homecoming at Oliver's last February. It was my birthday, so Jackie and I stopped in for a drink and a listen. And let me tell you, the old trolley station hasn't rocked that much since it was moved sideways after the trolley service stopped.
Mark said it felt good to come back, and he was reminded of how it is that the group has stayed together, despite the long pause in their professional relationship. The key, Mark says, is not to lose sight of the fact that friendship comes first. For more information on the band, check its Web site at www.myspace.com/ctwb.
