About Me

Songwriting, when you get it right is a divine instrument, and there is no doubt that Vancouver’s Tom Taylor writes songs with considerable power. His voice has a true familiar tone that draws you in with his songs that are both honest and heartfelt. Influenced greatly by Joe Ely and John Hiatt, it is the craft behind writing a song that he truly loves most. "Tom’s writing is the kind of stuff I find myself constantly saying "I wish I'd written that!" says Shari Ulrich. Tom spent most of his musical career playing in the Vancouver cult band She Stole My Beer (SSMB). The sought after campus favourite recorded and released two major label albums. SSMB toured extensively for years building themselves a strong and dedicated fan base. (There is even a She Stole My Beer cover band based out of Switzerland!). Recently, Curve Music re-released both SSMB albums digitally (available at Itunes). After parting ways with SSMB, Tom continued to perform live playing several of his own solo material. After some time off, Tom was encouraged to get back into the studio to record and preserve these gems that were getting great reactions from his live performances. Tom worked extensively in the studio with producer Steve Dawson and in July 2005, King of July was released on Curve Music in Canada. Shortly after, distribution made its way to The Netherlands, Belgium and South Korea. “It felt great to have my first solo effort released in all those places. It would have been nice to have gone to South Korea, although the Korean label has expressed interest in me touring there.”, Tom recalls. Tom is now ready to satisfy his fans, both old and new, with Running Late (Curve Music, 2008). Once again, JUNO award winning string master and producer, Steve Dawson, joins Tom in the studio in his quest to preserve those gems. Recorded at Henhouse studios in East Vancouver, Tom says that “with Steve’s help it went really quickly. He's such a fantastic guitar player and it was the kind of thing I wanted on the record." As Tom continues to carry the classic tradition of the singer/songwriter, capturing the listener with his introspective and emotion filled lyrics, the heart of all Tom’s music are the songs that document his power both as a songwriter and a musician. Like Jerry Jeff Walker and Guy Clark, Tom is a troubadour who will continue to effortlessly draw listeners into his world.

These would be The Band, Peter Tosh, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Warren Zevon, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Earle, Gillian Welch, John Prine, The Stones, Dave Lindley to name a few. There are a lot of old school names I know - I'm not so young either. There are newer folks I listen to as well. Young punks like Dustin Bentall and Cameron Latimer inspire me to get off my ass and write some music to. I'm sure I will keep adding to this list for some time.
