CAMPAIGNS
..
Books Not Bars fights to redirect California's resources away from youth incarceration and towards youth opportunities. We engage in grassroots campaigns using media advocacy, policy advocacy, grassroots organizing, and alliance building.
Currently, we are working to close California's abusive, expensive youth prisons and replace them with rehabilitation centers and community-based programs.
Green-Collar Jobs Campaign creates opportunities in the green economy for poor people and people of color through policy advocacy, public outreach, and an employment pipeline - the Green Jobs Corps.
A new, multi-billion dollar economic sector is emerging, bringing new opportunities in green construction, clean technology, urban agriculture and energy. Our goal: ensure that this green economy is strong enough to lift people out of poverty.
Silence The Violence is sparking a peace movement in Oakland! We work to decrease violence by increasing opportunity. Old approaches, like "getting tough on crime," have not stopped the downward spiral that led to 148 homicides in Oakland last year. It's time for a new approach, one based on hope and focused on the real reasons for violence.
Here at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights , we use a mix of tactics to accomplish our mission, from grassroots organizing, direct action and media advocacy to public education, policy reform and legal service. This has earned us a reputation for tenacity and innovation. But more importantly, it has earned victory after victory for our campaigns.
SOUL OF THE CITY: Join our newest campaign and help create an Oakland that is invested, safe, healthy and balanced!
