What is agave?
The sacred agave plant or "agave sisalana" also goes by the names sisal and century plant. It is native to the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. The ancient people had many uses for the agave plant including soap, clothes, food and medicine. It now thrives in semi-arid regions in many parts of the world including Brazil, China and Thailand where it is used mainly for the very strong hemp fiber derived from its leaves. Agave sisalana has a very close cousin called the "blue agave" or agave tequilana which is the plant that Tequila is made from.
Spirit Sticks agave didgeridoos are made from the flower spikes or stalks of the sacred agave plant. Having many thorns and being very fibrous and splintery, it is a very difficult medium to work with.
How are Spirit Sticks made?
I have been getting a lot of inquiries about how Indidgenous Creations Hawaii hollows out the agave stalks. This is a rather difficult process which involves many different steps and many good hours of diligent work.
I usually try to avoid saying exactly how I do this because many proprietary processes are employed. These special processes have been developed by a friend and I within the past 11 years. (the learning is always ongoing!)
Every earth element is involved in making Spirit Sticks:
Earth, Water, Wind, Fire and Love :)
Some may split the agave stalks in half lengthwise, core them out like seeding a cucumber, and then glue them back together. I do not believe in doing it this way because I feel that it takes away from the natural integrity and complete energies of the sacred instrument.
All Spirit Sticks agave didgeridoos have NOT been cut lengthwise and are unadulterated in this manner. I take great pride in this fact.
I find that not splitting them in half makes for a superior instrument with a more complete energy, that is also more solid, clear and resonant in how it performs.
Thanks for your interest and for stopping by!! I will be updating again soon :)
