News: Daniel joins new band MidasDivas

Yeah, so we've started a new band! Check it out, it's going to be a lot of fun! There are now some songs on myspace if you care to look :) Anyway we need some friends so don't be shy now! Got to myspace.com/midasdivas for more info.

About Me:

Well from growing up playing violin in Rockvegas , Australia, I've now moved to Vienna and have been here for 3 and 1/2 years or so. I've produced numerous contemporary and experimental acoustic music, and also electronic music mixed with acoustic sounds, and even the odd pop tune.

As a performer and composer I've been involved in lots of classical, contemporary, and crossover projects.

Performances include works played with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne International Chamber Music Festival, Grazer Hörfest, Ensemble Linea of Strasbourg, ForumFESTIVAL Graz and various music ensembles both in Australia, Austria, Germany and France.

James Brown Remixxx (get into it)

Hey so not all of my stuff is strictly 'out-there'. After James Brown passed away I thought that it's about time I did a tribute to the 'soul man', and here it is.. click on "get into it (like a sex machine)" Hey, what the heck, I'm one of your greatest fans!! :)

This was a lot of fun to write. It only took me 8 days, but hey, I had a deadline! It is really the exploration of a time-space, like say you step into a cathedral or a huge space and imagine that there is music playing, but you can't really make out all of the notes.

Many thanks to Peter Jacober for supporting this gig.

descent

... is an exploration of the tendency to 'fall-away' or to 'go under'. It is not necessarily a plunge into decadence or despair, or a journey into the abyss, but an focus on the process of descending rather than the actual descent. Notwithstanding that what comes up must also find its way down; for me the more exciting question is how.

Thanks goes to David Chisholm: you're awesome.

capriccio

...takes takes the idea of perpetual motion to a new level. For those familiar with Louis Andriessen's music for the short film M is for Man, Music, Mozart (Peter Greenaway), Capriccio uses a similar treatment of rhythm to what Andriessen saw as the "demystifying of Mozart".

Not only through the juxtaposing of dissimilar effects and musical fragmentation, there are other pitfalls—mostly to do with the parody of the "musical climax". If parody succeeds, everyone laughs; if not, everyone laughs at you.

Ahh Spiros Rantos, what would I do without you? Thanks so much.

Ok, where do I start...?

Let's just say I've heard too much music. Playing the violin all these years means I know crazy amounts of the Classical repertoire, and lots of the newer experimental scene.

I really like Schoenberg, Webern, Ligeti, Berio, Nono, Grisey, Jani Christou.... and of course you can't ignore the old masters, Bach, Haydn, Schubert, Palestrina, ...hey the other day I discovered some fantastic french troubadour music from the 13-15th Centuries :: amazing stuff! But enough about the dead guys.

The new scene is happening ::: check out Beat Furrer, Georg F Haas, Wolfgang Mitterer, Bernard Lang...

These days I have also been listening to more mainstream music, some of my favourites are Radiohead, Stero MCs, Prince (oh yeah! Musicology album), Foo Fighters, Cypress Hill's older albums, Toufic Farroukh (great turkish/jazz fusion), Astor Piazzolla... ok how about some Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Coltrane, Chet Baker for 'pure chill', Miles Davis, Dave Liebmann :: now there's a musician, Roby Lakatos, The Streets :: he's funny, and ok I forgot about heaps of electronic trance :: there's also some great electronic compilation series called Clicks and Cuts which I like very much. Who knows what it will all bring, hey it's all saved up there!

Spain!!

So in February/March 2007 I was in Spain! Just finished doing an orchestral tour there. These are a couple of shots of Granada and Seville:

It's was a lot of fun... there was plenty of flamenco thanks to the guy in the first photo (see, he's in the background behind the bar). His name is Pepe Peregil, he's actually very famous in Seville, and has sung all over the place, notwithstanding for the King and Queen of Spain. So, there's was lots of guitars and spontaneity and flamenco dancing.

Show my video of Pepe Peregil singing!! Now here's fantastic music making.

Anyway, so now I've been back in Vienna now and well, it's been so warm and sunny in the last few days I thought that I was back in Seville! :) The Viennese have no idea of what to do with themselves—there's nothing for them to get grumpy about anymore!
