OCEANSIDE ---- An Oceanside man died Friday night when his speeding car smashed into a palm tree, police said.
A Medical Examiner's investigator said Nam Nguyen, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene on El Camino Real, north of Fire Mountain Drive.
"Several witnesses saw the collision and said Nguyen may have been involved in an illegal street race with another vehicle," said investigating traffic officer Eric Anderson.
He said the other driver didn't stop. That car was described as a dark-colored Dodge Neon RT with racing stripes from front to back along the hood, roof and trunk. It had a loud exhaust or muffler.
Nguyen's 1995 Acura was traveling at "a very high rate of speed" when he lost control of it, slamming into the tree in the center median just before 9:30 p.m., Anderson said.
"The force of the impact caused the Acura to separate into three large pieces," said the officer. "Nguyen was killed instantly."
The Medical Examiner's investigator said Nguyen, who was the assistant manager of a local auto sound shop, is survived by his wife.
An investigation is continuing and police are asking anyone with information about the driver of the Neon (north county times sunday march 17 2002)
