About Me

Bakin Zub is a group of 5 distinguished musicians that was founded by Marko Ciciliani in 2005.
Bakin Zub is characterized by the combination of musicians from various musical domains, which gives the group a sound that defies to be placed in common cathegories. Instruments and electronics are combined, the latter not being a mere "add-on" but an integral part of the orchestration.
The performances of Bakin Zub include the use of elaborate light-installations and laser that are composed as complementary parts to the music. Sound and light are mainly controlled by specifically developed softwares, that are written in open source programming environments like SuperCollider and Processing.
In April 2007 Bakin Zub premiered and toured the evening-length multimedia work “My Ultradeep I” composed by Marko Ciciliani, which received critical acclaim.
In November 2008 the new work "Jeanne of the Dark" by Marko Ciciliani and Terre Thaemlitz was premiered by Bakin Zub at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival. The press wrote: "Jeanne of the Dark is a tour-de-force, performed with high concentration and commitment".

Influences: Marko Ciciliani is founder and artistic director of Bakin Zub.

Born in 1970 in Croatia, Marko Ciciliani received his musical training as a composer and electronic musician in New York, Hamburg and The Hague.
Already during his studies he has collected extensive experience not only in the fields of “academic” composition, but also in free improvisation and with various pop-settings. He has written for a variety of settings, including orchestra, ensembles, solo works and sound installations, often including live-electronics or other media like light, video or cartoons.
Since 1996 he lives in Amsterdam/Netherlands and is currently following a PhD program at the Brunel University in London on the combination of sound and light. From January 2009 on he is teachning at the composition department of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

Typical for Ciciliani’s work is that it tries to combine seemingly contradictory materials, giving the composition a feeling of experiment and playfulness, with surprising turns and a variety of color.

The different “genres” in which Ciciliani’s music can be heard and seen, are reflecting his manifold musical activities. His music has been programmed by festivals of electronic experimental music like Club Transmediale Berlin, Super Deluxe/Tokyo or the NowNow Series/Sydney just as much as by international festivals for chamber music like Wien Modern, Gaudeamus, Forum Neue Musik Deutschlandfunk, Zagreb Biennale, ISCM World Music Days and many more. Also his sound installations have been presented by Galleries and Museums in the Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
He has written for ensembles such as ASKO, ensemble Intégrales, Zeitkratzer, Orkest de Volharding, Interzone Perceptible, MAE and others.

As a performer Ciciliani has specialised in the no-input mixer, a mixing board which does not use any external inputs, but where all sounds are created through internal feedbacks. As an improviser he has given concerts with Fred Frith, Gordon Mumma, Jaap Blonk, Axel Dörner and Sachiko M, amongst others. He has toured extensively with this instrument in different countries and continents, most recently on a solo tour in Australia and Japan.

In 2009 Marko Ciciliani is recipient of the prestigeous Villa Aurora Stipend, a three-month artists residency in Los Angeles.
