Ritesh Das, composer and musician, has studied tabla with gurus Pandit Shankar Ghosh, Ustad Zakir Hussain and most extensively with Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. He has toured throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and India, and performed with many of India's great music and dance innovators. Since moving to Canada, he has established himself as an extraordinary teacher of tabla and founded the Toronto Tabla Ensemble in 1991.
Ritesh teaches tabla in the traditional style. Classes introduce and develop understanding in tabla stroke technique, recitation (the fundamental spoken tradition that goes hand in hand with the playing technique) and rhythmic theory. Class levels, which are available from the introductory to professional levels, allow for the student interested in studying tabla as a means of relaxation, or those who wish to become professional musicians.
Teacher to student lineage is an integral part of traditional study methods. All students have opportunity to study with Ritesh's guru, tabla master Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri , on his annual visits to our institution.
