As a young child, Andrea Orlen was Fascinated by records! Early each morning hours before her parents would awake, Andrea and her older sister Monica, would carelessly pull out components from their mom and dad's record collection, stand on a chair to reach the turntable and attempt to carefully place the needle on these mysterious 12 inch vinyl discs without scratching the surface...The latter rarely happened and many a record was scratched :-)
The two sisters thirsty young ears would nondiscriminatly focus on each captivating melody and listen intently while the notes resonated from the speaker cabinets. Eventually, after learning their ABC's, one would sit in front of the stero with pencil to paper, while the other would intermittently lift the needle off the record and write down the words of the verse, in preparation for their sisterly sing alongs. Sometimes they were lucky enough to get ahold of their dad's clunky 70's tape recorder and would put their own individual spin on the songwriting process by singing about various topics such as red and blue crayons and having dinner at the now defunked fast food joint, Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips. Edit: My sister just emailed to tell me that Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips is not defunked and is in fact still in business..Noted :-)
During their teenage years, Andrea begged for guitar lessons while Monica promised her sister that she would learn to play bass so they could one day start their very own Rock N' Roll band. In the interim, Andrea cofounded the Punk rock duo "Unfeminine Hygiene" with her high school best friend and despite the minimal proficiency each girl had with her respective instrument, the heavily eye shadowed pair still managed to spray paint the name of the band on the side of a neighborhood building in spite of their unrealized repertoire of songs. The two sisters however, continued to hold impromptu band practices in the shared upstairs bathroom of their Long Island childhood home, as they applied way to much makeup and belted out Siouxsie and the Banshee's tunes into hair brushes in front of the bathroom mirror. Time marched on, and sadly High School distractions got the better of Monica, but Andrea eventually mastered the 8 chords she stills continuously strums today which led to forming her first band "Getta Outta Town" followed by the Indie Rock trio "Venus Envy".
4 chords, two bands, 100's of shows including several CBGB headlines and a ton of DIY releases later, Andrea is now a solo singer/songwriter in Hollywood, CA, and simultaneously flies the unfriendly skies while hawking her twangier tunes to the glossy Nashville songstress du jour and building her sync credits one broadcast at a time..
