The MountainTone Music Workshop was created in January,2007 by Jim Scott Mullins , a regional artist/musician, who was raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia.Born into a singing family, Scott has been writing and performing music for nearly 20 years. The repertoire of the family has consisted of mostly spiritual and gospel music. Scott's late father, Billy Gene was a coal miner, a singer/musician and Freewill Baptist minister. The family has performed at churches, homecomings, and community gatherings for over 60 years, and have made several recordings of their a'capella, gospel, and traditional music. In the late nineties, the family celebrated their unique tradition of music in the onstage production of NEW GROUND REVIVAL, a collaboration with Roadside Theater. The musical play was written by musician/performer/playwright (and family cousin) Ron Short of Big Stone Gap, Va. The play toured nationally to enthusiastic audiences in the states of Montana, North Carolina,Georgia, Ohio, Arizona and in New York City. A companion CD recording, entitled WINGS TO FLY was later released on the Copper Creek label in 2001.A retrospective CD of the family's work, LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE OUT, was released in 2006 and was produced in cooperation with the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities as part of the CROOKED ROAD series. In September, 2007,MountainTone Music Workshop released its first independent project, a tribute album entitled LABORING SOLDIER: A TRIBUTE TO BILLY GENE MULLINS.In the last few years, Mountain Tone Music has continued to produce next generation recordings by regional artists.
