Marilyn Monroe was born as Norma Jeane Mortensen on June 1st 1926 to Gladys Baker,She never knew her father.Gladys was committed to a mental institution.Most of Norma Jeane's childhood was spent in Orphanages and Foster Homes.In 1937 Norma Jeane moved in with Grace Goddard.In 1942 Grace and her husband could no longer afford to take care of Norma Jeane.On June 19th 1942 Norma Jeane married 21-year-old Jim Dougherty,nearly 3 weeks after her 16th birthday.In 1944 Jim joined The Merchant Marines and was sent to Catalina Island.
Norma Jeane started to work at the Radio Plane Munitions factory in Burbank,CA.While Norma Jeane was at work David Conover seen her while taking pictures of women who were contributing to the war effort,he took her picture and later sent her modeling jobs.Norma Jeane had her fisrt magazine cover on April 26th 1946.She loved to model and began to take drama classes,she wanted to become and actress.Norma Jeane divorced Jim in June of 1946,and on August 26th 1946,she signed her first contract with 20th Century Fox.She later dyed her hair blonde and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe.In 1949 she posed for the famous red velvet nude calendar.
Marilyn's first movie was "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim",But the movie that made her a star was 1953's "Niagra",She played a wife who plans to kill her husband.In 1953 she co-starred with Jane Russel in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" and co-starred with Betty Grable and Lauen Bacall in "How To Marry A Millionare".On June 26th 1953,she was immortalized at the Graumans Chinese Theatre when she left her handprints in cement.On January 14 1954,Marilyn married Joe Dimaggio at San Francisco City Hall.On their honeymoon in Tokyo,Marilyn went to Korea to perform for the troops.Joe was extremely jealous throughtout the marriage,especially when Marilyn filmed the famous scene in "The Seven Year Itch" where Marilyn stands over the subway grating and her skirt flys up,the scene didn't pass the censors and was later filmed in a studio.They were divorced on October 27 1954.
Marilyn started her own production company called "Marilyn Monroe Productions",which produced "Bus Stop" and "The Prince and the Showgirl".On June 29th 1956 Marilyn married playwright Arthur Miller in a Jewish ceremony.In 1959 Marilyn co-starred with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot,she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy.In 1961 Arthur Miller wrote the part of Roslyn just for Marilyn.She co-starred with Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift in "The Misfits".On January 20 1961,Marilyn and Arthur were divorced.In 1962 Marilyn began to work on "Somethings Got To Give",the film was never finished."The Misfits" was Marilyn's last completed film.
In the early hours of August 5th 1962 Marilyn was found dead in her home.The death was ruled as "Probable Suicide" due to overdose of Barbiturates,Some belive it was accidental overdose and others belive it was a Conspiracy.On August 8th 1962 Marilyn was laid to rest at Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles,California.Marilyn left us with 30 films and countless pictures.She was more than just a pretty face,She was an amazing,talented,caring,strong and smart Woman.All she ever wanted was to be loved,and now she is loved and adored by millions.She is an inspiration for anyone who comes from a deprived background and wishes to achieve greatness.
