About Me

I'm SL. The one and only. Forget Mercedes. Forget Technics. Forget Slough. I'm not South London nor am I Sri Lanka. Just me. Well don'e for getting past the first paragraph. Now, if you're here reading this at all you've performed a minor miracle, which could turn out to be a major fuck up. Let's face it, you're probably here entirely by mistake and I should imagine that you haven't found the person you were looking for or just happened upon my page by some random fate, diddums. Anyway, if you're in the slightest bit interested please read on. I was born in 1978 in West Middlesex Hospital and have been a resident in Twickenham ever since. I got into hip-hop at an early age, through many trips as a kid to LA, where my dad lived. It was a mixture of MTV startin' to show 'rap' and hearing cars going by in the suburb of Highland Park. I then became a big fan of rap shows on the radio back home, on Capital, Radio 1 and Kiss, to name but a few. After first writing a rhyme for fun at about 12 years old it was a while before I ever started to write regularly and actually take it a bit more seriously. In fact it wasn't 'til I started at Richmond college in '94 that I got more heavily involved in the UK scene, at around the time that people such as Roots Manuva, Ty, Mud Fam & Blak Twang first came to my attention. In fact it was tunes like Real Estate, along with the New Mic Order stuff and others around that time that inspired me to reach for the pen and pad more frequently. I spent a lot of time as a late teen in the local youth centre studio putting tracks on to tapes, generally seeing what the vocals sounded like. Back then I was known simply as SL, but as anyone who uses their initials as an alias will testify, there are many people doing it (so the latter part of the name was taken from a couple of nicknames and added purely to be different)! After gaining a few contacts and meeting up with the infamous Nural Scientist to record many bedroom mix tapes and long, smoked-out sessions spittin' over 303 beats, I had some invites to emcee at various events. From Twickenham pubs, to Chiswick clubs and a venture to the Soundshaft and to the Dogstar, but not much in between! I've also been played out on a peace march from Hague in Holland to Brussels in Belgium, as well as contributing lyrically at a party in aid of peace. The few tracks here are from a few years ago, somewhat lacking in production and clarity, before that I used to be a lot more political. Sometimes very angry! I'm starting to chill now, since I've been on sabbatical, working long shifts and trying to get some money in before I think about being creative again. Unfortunately, if you can't get paid, like so many people trying to make music out there, you have to hang up the mic, or whatever instruments you might play, 'til you can afford to give yourself some spare time to chill. I have a busy schedule with trying to cope with life at the moment, but am still writing and have a huge back catalogue of verses. I'll be back with some new material once the production's in place. Will hopefully hit this spot back up again before the summer. Thanks for reading, peace,SL
