About Me
I'm a 34 year old "laaaadddy". I was born and grew up in Ontario (Toronto area). The Mahoney's where a clan from Cork, Ireland whom immigrated to TO to drink and join the police force. My grandfather is a perfect example; he played pro hockey for New York, retired to the Toronto police force, yes he was Sgt. Mahoney.
The one thing that always stood out about Toronto to me was the theatre. My uncle worked as the lighting director for many Andrew Lloyd Webber productions (Jacky rogers Jr) and many others. I was introduced to the magic of performance as a kid, by hanging out with him in the wings of some the greatest old time theaters in Canada. (Royal Alex, Pantages, O'keefe). I was hooked early and that was it.
As a teenager, I would frequent the Old Fire Hall Theatre and watch the Second City Improv shows. Then when I was old enough, you had to be 18 then, I studied improv with them for about 2-years.
Then I left Ontario for a bit of french/Canadian culture (poutine, beer) to attend Bishop's University, just outside of Metropolitan Montreal. I studied here for four years and received an Hons BA in Theatre Arts and Psychology. (my favorite part was doing Russian clowning with Mump and Smoot and poutine, bear).
After graduation, I moved out west and in 1999, I started doing stand up. I liked performing , but found the stand up scene a bit overwhelming(I thought high school was over) and wanted to do something different.
On Canada Day 1999, I performed my first ever solo street performance based on a burlesque clown from the mump and smoot workshops. I was was again hooked and for the next 7 years, ate, slept, breathed everything about street theatre. It has been incredibly great to me.
It has taken me all over the world and allowed me to perform at such respected festivals as; The Edinburgh Fringe(UK), Glastonbury Festival(UK), Avignon Festival(France), Koblenz festival(DE), The World Buskers festival (NZ) and many many more. check out my street performance website WWW.SHARONMAHONEY.COM
It also gave me the opportunity to perform and meet with great artist from all over the world, such as Eddie Izzard (yes, he was a street performer in Covent Garden for many years), Alex Dandridge(has finally cleansed himself of all negativity in a danish boyfriend/don't spoil the holiday), Phil Kay(maddest, brilliant loone I have watched perform), The flying dutchmen(gone, but not forgotten), Abi Collins(she won 1st prize in fanny farting), Jenny Eclair, David McSavage"(he loves you all each and individually, too bad he is gay)", The Three Canadians(my dirty brothers, who have been known to seduce a kangaroo whilst wearing mexican wrestling masks), Dave Lawrence(he was Fubar way before the movie).
This is my job, my only job, the job I choose because I love it and I feel incredibly lucky that I am able to support myself solely from this(ignore my adult site). It gives me the freedom to see the world, perform continually and also allows me to explore other avenues of performance. (once again ignore)
In the spring of 2005, I was performing my Canada character in the Melbourne comedy festival and my friends encouraged me to get back into stand up. I did and wanted more.
Since, moving back to Canada, I have been spending lots of time in Vancouver, doing open mics and working out material. I think being a bit older and having all the experience of the street world, I have been able to see the scene for what it is and do it because I love to perform and enjoy the creative process/despite missing the UK humor.
I have met some wonderful people whom I greatly admire. I have also realized that having a life outside of performance is very important.(actually having any life is important) I need people in my life that are safe and whom I can always depend on for a honest, sincere answer, that is not loaded with motives of their own. THIS HAS SAVED MY SANITY!...(many would disagree)
I love all sports and swim quite religiously(just to perv on the hairy greek Albanian men in the hot tub). I don't like having a lot of "stuff". Too many clothes or material items make me feel heavy and trapped. Don't get me wrong, I am not a Monk (hang on, I just spilt my grande soya half sweet peppermint, half sweet vanilla latte all over my new gap boot leg cut pants..gaaawwwd), I like nice things and have some precious gadgets like a new lab-top and ipod(why won't it vibrate) that I have fallen in love with. I just prefer to keep it simple (clean the tub with toilet paper) having too much stuff around me seems to bring the Black Dog visiting without invitation.
That's about all I can think of right now, I want to make this the longest, self centered profile yet, I think I'm on track.
monolithic is 10 letter word.
