About Me

I play 5-string bass and bodhràn for Montréal- and Calgary-based Celtic/pop trio Squidjigger, and I'm also the 5-ver for Late for Dinner, an all-originals folk/rock band from Montréal Ouest. When I'm not plucking strings or beating the pagan goatskin, I'm making a living as a freelance writer and editor. Neither of my jobs pay like they should, but I like 'em anyway. I work mostly in magazines, but I've also done websites, screenwriting, and all kinds of stuff. I'm also an amateur and dilletantish photographer. I've shot a band or two and a couple of weddings, but I prefer shooting for the hell of it.
I like my mountain bikes and I love getting away from concrete and diesel fumes for a day or so.
I used to paint. Hell, I spent most of my life in one art school or another until I was a young adult. I don't do that any more, and I think that everyone should disappoint their family that badly at least once in life.
And no, I don't read music notation, but I can follow a chart pretty well.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

People to talk music with -- unless they're going to tell me to go back to 4 strings (I like my low B) or switch up to 6 (That's just ostentatious).

I'm pretty open to chatting with anyone, so long as it doesn't get to damned *earnest.* I don't need to be told how special I am or any of that. I have RL friends to do that with.

And please don't be too witty. I find that wit is the hallmark of those who just don't look close enough.

Fenders and such

I'm not sure why bassists get singled out for 'special' treatment, but many of us have been in the position of walking into a studio to record, pulling out a cool, active bass and having the tech or p...

Music and... music.

...so when I saw the Me Mom & Morgentaler show (to support the re-release of Shiva Space Machine), I was both happy to see that, even a decade and a half after their last show as an active Montréal ba...

Kubrick

So, last Thursday, I went to a Warner media appreciation party for Q4 2007. It was a pretty good bash: It was a Blade-Runner-themed evening, complete with two girls walking around in costume and a *hu...

Microsoft sets Bungie free

Man, I'd love to know what it was that culminated in Microsoft spinning Bungie off. To be sure, this is likely an event that many old hard-line Mac gamers have dreamt of, ever since M$ bought the game...

Waiting for the Shakeup

In his terrific book The World Without Us, Alan Weisman describes the day-to-day maintenance problems faced my New York City Transit's Paul Schuber and Peter Briffa. Specifically, their constant clos...

Trans-Canada gigging

incidentally, the Squids played a gig for WestJet in Calgary last Friday night. It went fairly well for a corporate gig -- by which I mean that you tend not to get the same kind of high-energy drink-a...

Byelectoral slings and arrows

It makes me so happy to see an NDP seat in Québec that I can *almost* ignore the results in the other two polls yesterday. For a dose of all things dismal, the Conservatives took one seat and the Bloc...

New page

I've been sorta, kinda working on this page for a while, and I guess I'm about ready to consider it live. Not much in the way of tunes or pictures yet, but that'll all come soon.
