Music De Beauvoir

About Me

Music De Beauvoir is the brainchild of renowned producers Precise and Olson (P&O). Previously signed to Wall of Sound as two thirds of UK hip-hop outfit Vinyl Dialect, the pair received acclaim for singles "B-Boys Rock the World", "Ouch!" and LP "Dialect." Recognition of their work included Single of the Month awards in HHC, DJMag and Undercover, LP of the month in DJMag and TV/Radio appearances on Gonzo on Snow, One World, Xfm plus a European tour with label-mates Ugly Duckling. They also performed in three DMC finals as “The Plagiawrists” and released tracks on the OM Compilation “Deeper Concentration 3” and DC records “Skye Files 3” as well as DJ residencies at Fabric, 93ft East and Traders.
Music de Beauvoir is a 10-piece prog-hop orchestra fusing together turntablism and samples with the more old-school components of a jazz/funk band. The music takes its roots in some of the more adventurous library music of the 60s and 70s -labels like Boswoth, Conroy, KPM and, naturally, Music de Wolfe. This music has been sampled by P&O in their deBeauvoir town studio, and turned into tracks that they have then scored for a big band.
What sets Music de Beauvoir apart is the unique interaction between the traditional elements of library music – the funky engine room of drums and bass guitar, the Hammond-style keyboard accompaniment, the syncopated guitar and the blaring horn section – and the turntable. However, the pair are wary of the dangers of the decks sounding out of place, and so rather than use them exclusively as a flashy solo opportunity, they also seek to manipulate the samples into becoming a subtle and equal part of the ensemble. Effectively, they are playing with their band both melodically and rhythmically with parts written specifically for the turntable and sampler.
The group includes some of the cream of British jazz and funk instrumentalists. Drummer Tim Giles has performed with UK jazzers such as Iain Ballamy and Richard Fairhurst; while his own project with MDB reeds player James Allsopp (‘Fraud’ of the Babel label), continues to make waves. Bass player Leon de Bretagne has worked with soul giants such as Jill Scott and ?uestlove, while guitarist Ike Robinson is one of the hottest young axe-wielders on the scene. The horn piece is loaded with Royal Academy graduates – including Allsopp, Cristoffer Appel (of Sights & Sounds fame), the hard-hitting trombonist Chris Webster, Rebelation’s Dan Friend and Duck Soup’s Robbie Robson while ..board is Danish dream Esben Tjalve (a regular for Miss King & The Cougars).
