every note of every song ever is stuck in my head

About Me

i work too much. i like to eat. i like to listen to music. i like to take it easy. i insist that you write to me if you want to know more.

My Interests

order here is non-indicative of anything whatsoever. also very non-inclusive: books from the new shelf at the library. agriculture. architecture. aviation. backpacking. not feeling stupid and/or greasy. making spreadsheets and cypherin'. putting off straightening my home. observing people. ignoring snakes, be they poisonous or non. the deconstruction of advertisements and marketing. noticing poor spelling in public and in print. geographic phenomena. a really well-made map. comfortable shoes. smooching. thinking about the future. hammocks. most things analog. reading 1/2s of books. getting lathered up about our current pResident. meditating. socially responsible investing. music. alternative energy sources. sleep. not receiving gifts on special occasions. dark woods and light marble or granite. fresh laundry w/o fabric softener or dryer sheets. tea-tree soaked toothpicks. cheese sandwiches. peanut-butter and honey sandwiches. noodles. preservation of old stuff. and a couple of other things, too.

I'd like to meet:

persons who stimulate my brain in a low-key fashion... width="425" height="350" ..

Music:

i "did" college radio (WRFL) for nigh-on 6 years and it ruined my head; i am concerned that if i were to start, i might not be able to finish. oh well, let's see what's on my computer, not to mention on the shelves... Dave Pajo, Bonnie Prince Billy, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Low, Money Mark, Nick Drake, Phillip Glass, Rachel's, Polyphonic Spree, Stereolab, The 6ths, Tortoise, Grandaddy, Spiritualized, Lou Barlow's various affectations, Belle & Sebastian, Bright Eyes, Brainiac, Deathcab For Cutie, Deerhoof, Elliot Smith, Guided By Voices, JSBX, Le Tigre, Les Savy Fav, Man...Or Astroman?, Melvins, Modest Mouse, Mike Patton/Mr. Bungle, Pegboy, Pixies, Polvo, Postal Service, Shellac, Sonic Youth, The Microphones, Moldy Peaches, White Stripes, Trans Am, Ween, Yo La Tengo, Bjork, Godheadsilo, Spacemen 3, Tom Waits, MC Paul Barman, Tipsy, The Future Sound Of London, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, E.L.O., Talking Heads, Fela Kuti, Hasil Adkins, Johnny Cash, Mummies, Negativland, Utah Phillips, Air, Crispin Glover, Pavement/Malkmus. Oh yeah, and The Beatles.

Movies:

After years of having a crap TV and a rarely-used VCR, as well as a disdain for Hollywood, I've splurged on a new HDTV and a DVD player. Then I signed up for Netflix. So when I have time I'm slowly taking in the movies I've wanted to but not seen over the past few years. Would recommend "Fog Of War", "You, Me, & Everyone We Know", and "Human Nature" as recent favorite finds. All time favorites include "Adaptation", "Antonia's Line", "Koyaaniqatsi", and "Has Anyone Seen My Pants?".

Television:

C-SPAN, PBS (esp. Mr. Rogers and The McLauglin Group), The Young Ones... I recently found that I'm getting free cable, so I'm doing my damndest to not get sucked into the hours of total crap that is piped in.

Books:

i enjoy owning them and borrowing them from the library. and the library is the best use of my tax money that i can think of. caveat: i can't really swallow much fiction in general. i wish that weren't the case, but almost every fiction i try to read, i completely don't absorb. but since you insist: Wendell Berry, Daniel Pinkwater, how-to books, personal finance & socially responsible investing, AdBusters, Watchmen, Dan Clowes, Chris Ware, textbooks. the latest thing i read cover to cover was a thick brochure on hiking and biking in SW Pennsylvania, both rail-to-trails and more rugged options.

Heroes:

Fred Rogers, Wendell Berry, Jimmy Carter, Mom, Dad, Peace Pilgrim, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, & anyone who works hard for little pay doing necessary civil services that others take for granted.
