I am an American slave serving the wealthy. In particular I make a rich person's home look even better than it did when I walked into it, which was already much nicer than my own. I pay rent to a person wealthier than I am to live in a box made of concrete, two by fours and drywall wherein I have a bed, a refrigerator, some other basic amenities and a glowing box that tells me who I should be, what I should buy and what to believe... (but I don't really trust it) I usually adjust the setting on the box to make me chuckle softly or play a "game" that involves a fantasy that I can watch unfold while I move my thumbs over a controller in the precise way that the game requires.
Slavery used to involve the importation of tribal peope into our "civilized" country and the subsequent beating and dehumanization of those people. Eventually this became unsdesirable and after a particularly bloody war, slavery went through a long but drastic change. As quality of life increased for slave owners, it also improved physically for slaves. Modern American slaves may not even work at all. However, the separation of slave and wealthy classes is intact and the dehumanization process remains in a much more psycological and subtle form. Mental slavery has become more desired as mechanical automation and outsourcing have replaced much hard labor (unless you're a mexican). Fear is the main tool used to maintain this slave class. Further imprisonment, starvation, exile from the community, terrorism, and a religion that promises punishment after death all serve to keep the slaves in the perfect state of fear. To escape these situations, a mental slave need only remain in his/her social position and consume enough goods, spending all of his/her excess monetary credit (or more) to put money back into the hands of his/her captors. Many of these slaves seek legal or illegal drugs to allieviate feelings of boredom, worthlessness or physical pain and sedate themselves properly for continued slavery. Most slaves realize that they are working for the total environmental destruction of their home planet, yet feel powerless to effect change. The only way to do so would be to escape the slave system entirely. Although this would seem most desirable, the need to appear "normal" outweighs all other conscerns in this largely conformist system. There is hope for a slave to work his/her way up into the Master Wealthy class and in turn become of captor of the very people he/she formerly lived amongst. This is considered great sucess and those who accomplish this feat are incredibly useful in enforcing the slave system. They are often seen driving a vehicle much like any other slave but carrying the letters: BMW or a mishapen peace symbol. Often, a decal resembling a fish is also affixed to the rear of this vehicle to signify an alliegance to the religious enforcement program.
Any attempt to escape this system is considered antisocial behavior and is met with scorn, persecution, imprisonment, and in the more extreme cases: death.
