About Me

Rick Rangno is one of Ottawa's most in-demand trumpet players. Recently retired as lead trumpet for the Central Band of the Canadian Forces, Rick is now working full-time as a freelance trumpet player and teacher. Born in Winnipeg, Rick spent his teen years in Kelowna, BC. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver with a Bachelor of Music degree before joining the Canadian Forces as a trumpet player. Since settling in Ottawa he has been very active in the local music scene as a member of various groups including Caridad Cruz and Kubacua, The Kim Kaskiw Quintet, Rocket Rached and the Fat City 8, The Jivewires, Conjunto Rumbavant, The Soul Review Board, Banda Klave, Corazon Salseros, The Funky Presidents, The Custums, Azuka, the J.W. Jones Band, Superband Big Band and the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra (IJO) in which he holds the solo trumpet chair and is also a member of the orchestra's artistic planning team.Rick cites Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, Randy Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and the great Maynard Ferguson as influences. He has a wide range of musical interests but is particularly enthused when playing kickass horn-driven funk and blues a la James Brown and Tower of Power or driving salsa by the likes of Ray Barretto, Irakere and Eddie Palmieri.
