About Me

The painter Gbenga Ilumoka was born in London in 1967. He studied a BA in Fine Art at Middlesex University, then on to do an MA in drawing at the Prince of Wales drawing school. However, Ilumoka feels that his real teacher was Nahem Shoa, who taught him the craft of painting, through shape, colour and tone. Gbenga Ilumoka is a gifted teacher in his own right and sought out by art schools all over the country.Ilumoka’s art stems out of his deep love of the natural world in all it’s glory. His aim is to convey this inspiration in paint, but with vision, understanding and uncompromising investigation. Trying to capture how light reflects off objects, with rich but subtle colours is at the heart of his art. He has come to the realisation that there are no shadows in nature only reflections. ‘Reflections’ was the title of his one-man show at the Millinery Works Gallery, London in April 2006. Illumoka has had his work in a number of national competions, including The Royal Society Of Portrait Painters. Since 2004 he has had two major solo shows in London. His work is sought after by many private collectors and can be seen in many collections worldwide.Gbenga Illumoka is part of new wave in British painting, which has come about after the end of post modernism. This edgy, urban and exciting movement in painting is called New British Realism, Illumoka is not just part of this movement, he is one of the artist shaping it.
