John McMillan

About Me

John McMillan grew up in rural Florida, singing and playing music for as long as he can remember. "I'd been in several bands with a modicum of local celebrity by the time I graduated from high school," says John, "I'd been in several more bands by the time I graduated from college." McMillan grew up on Elvis, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, Lefty Frizell, and Johnny Cash, and hopes that somehow this healthy diet of early rock'n'roll, country, blues, and other forms of "folk" music are reflected in the songs that he's writing today. He has played hundreds of shows throughout the southeast, as well as many very intimate performances a little further up the east coast in New York City (which can be quite different from playing the "world famous" Tootsie's in Nashville, TN.) John McMillan has also recorded with some of today's hottest session players, including musician/producer Michael Ramos (John Mellencamp, Patti Griffin, the Bo Deans, the Rembrandts) and famed slide-guitarist Billy Cassis (Charlie Sexton, Double Trouble). Recently, John has written several songs with Stan Lynch (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Don Henley, Tim McGraw) and Billy Chapin (award-winning writer/producer, session/touring guitarist for international acts such as Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears). After all of these accomplishments, and though only a few years removed from his days of studying English and Film Theory at the University of Florida, a period which also helped to shape and inform the poetry of his sound, John McMillan continues to make his mark on the music industry. As he does, we promise to keep you posted.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: johnmcmillan.com
Band Members: I'm a solo artist, but I do consistently play with the same great musicians: Stephen Baker (guitar, drums, steel, piano, BGVs) and Brad Willenberg (bass, BGVs). Some of us get along all of the time, most of us get along some of the time, but ALL of us can't get along ALL of the time! Nevertheless, Steve and Brad are some of the best and most talented players in the business, as well as some of my closest friends.
Influences: (see "Bio")--However, I will say of the aforementioned artists that E.P. and Bobby D. are the biggest influences on my sound.
Sounds Like: If Country, Blues, and Contemporary Rock'n'Roll walked into a bar and got into a fistfight, no one would win, but my music would be the most sufficient soundtrack for the hyperbolic brawl.
Record Label: Death and Desire Music
