HØEK

About Me

HØEK’s ingredients are as easy as efficient: guitar, bass, drums and vocals whirling up dust, which is blown by the wind into fields of Stoner Rock, Desert Rock, Heavy Psychic Rock and Doom. The propelling rhythm section is generating a groove that leads to a mutation from the foot-lame to the Travolta of Rock disco.
HØEK was founded in 1996. They started as a four-piece. After having played some live shows they recorded a demo tape in 1997 including 5 songs (german lyrics). A little later the singer left the band and Robin started singing.
HØEK’s first recording as a three-piece was released in 1998 - a split-EP only on 12" clear vinyl together with punk rockers Flickknife Dandy from Germany. Alessandro, Martin and Robin decided to record one track (’The Only Way Out’), which offers over eight minutes of Space-Rock. It already gave an impression of what was about to come up.
HØEK joined the Cargo-Split-Series (also Nebula/Lowrider and Unida/Dozer) with their EP ‘HØEK meets bijola’ released on 12" deluxe-heavy and multi-coloured vinyl and on CD in 1999. Five intense songs showing that HØEK know how to transfer their live-feeling to the studio.
HØEK shared stages with bands like Nebula, Dozer, 35007, Blackmail, Spirit Caravan or The Heads. They were touring through Europe with bands like Celestial Season (NL), The Mushroom River Band (Swe), The Awesome Machine (Swe) and Pawnshop (Nor). Many shows followed.
HØEK then presented their first full-length album in 2002 called ’Alt157’. Eleven Rock-pearls, which the band-members like to call ’Overdrive-Session-Rock’. Produced by the trio itself and Tim Buktu (also Heartbreak engines, Gore’s party, Massacra, Uncle Ho) ‘Alt 157’ shows the development of the band since their foundation in 1996. ‘…capably produced space rock with massive doom riffs and a lot of psychedelic sounds. Very fat rocking production’. That’s what ‘Rock Hard’ judged about ‘Alt157’ in May 2002.
HØEK decided to add a little more of contemporary alternative Rock to their second album to be able to stretch the tension curve even further. One must call this experiment successful. HØEK offer a great variety on their self-titled album. Powerful riffs that build sound embankments that would have preserved Rome from the setting still today. Sometimes the guitar runs so fast it wouldn’t have any problem to qualify for Olympia, which partially leaves the fields of Space Rock.
’HØEK’ was produced by Tim Buktu again and its sound fulfils all expectations a Rock-Fan could have. Their ‘Overdrive Session Rock’ has matured into a tasty monster full of power in the studio of Tim Buktu. 14 song-litres of the finest, smoothest oil that run down your canals and light a fire inside.
HØEK really know how to serve their audience. This could have been experienced, when they supported Monster Magnet on two shows in Germany, where they nailed their listeners against the wall. The Mastermind of MM, Dave Wyndorf himself, wanted HØEK to play another show as opener in Bochum (Zeche) after he saw their show in Solingen (Getaway).
HØEK are able to generate awesome power on stage. It is quite impressive to experience that three musicians are able to do so. Even more impressive is the fact that HØEK always manage to transfer this energy to their albums. ‘HØEK’ is another proof. (rb)

Influences:

’Germany’s Hoek are about as far from the desert as you can get. But in sound they are smack dab in the middle of it. (...) Hoek (a slash thru the "o") have a very desert-influenced sound, with elements of psychedelia, 60’s and 70’s rock with a bit of metal thrown in for good measure. Noticeable influences on sound are Black Sabbath, Nebula and Gas Giant. They also feature a Blues for the Red Sun and Sky Valley - period Kyuss type wall of sound.’ (Daryl Baysinger, Hellride Music)

’This is some heavy-ass variety stoner rock. High energy freedom blues psychedelic rock with great vocals that remind me of a mix between Robert Plant and Ian Astbury. It’s mostly driving riff rock. Sometimes busy like Tool, sometimes more straight ahead 70’s (Deep Purple) style space rock. Like a locomotive chugging down the tracks. Great breaks and progressive qualities thrown in on the average 4-6 minute songs. (...) heavy driving psychedelic...your desert stoner stuff. File this one by Kyuss and Dozer.’ (robwrong, StonerRock.com)

Sounds Like:

’The music is always floating with cosmic effects, heavy grooved based riffs and perfectly sung vocals by Robin C G. This 3 –piece know how to rock and I can imagine their tour would have been a fucking killer to see. (...) a ton of heavy typical stonerish riffs, the vocals reminding a lot of Pete Stahl who in most minds, is one of the best vocalist getting around today. Well Robin C. G. Is close to topping him on this one, this guy can play guitar and also sing fucking well! (...) Germany is really starting to get some quality bands together and Hoek sit in the front line of this scene! Rock on “Hoek” and keep producing great records guys you’ve nailed this one right on the head...’ (Matt Frighetto, PlanetFuzz)
