I am here for Friends

About Me

Devoted husband and father. I swim and sometimes practice judo. I'm a poet, a lifeguard, formerly a stay-at-home dad, and a homeschooler. I love to cook and I have professional training; but I can hardly ever find the time to do it, anymore. I sing in the shower, the kitchen, and the car. I sail, and I raise bees. I am a Golden Dragon and a Golden Shellback .

During High School, I worked as a cowboy on ranches in Arizona and New Mexico. Then, when I graduated, I joined the Navy and served for six years, four of them on the Fast Attack Nuclear Submarine USS Haddo (SSN 604), which has since been decommissioned. From there, I went on to college to get my Engineering degree. That's where I met Robbie, whom I later married. I worked for the Navy again, for a while, as a civilian engineer; but was miserable there, and so quit and sold real estate for a year before going back to school to become a chef.

I couldn't find a cooking job that left me with any time to spend with Robbie, so I went to work for the IRS for a couple of years and studied accounting at the same time, then went back to school again to study Technical Communication and Computer Science (and a little bit more Engineering), and to get some of the Humanities classes that I couldn't take while studying for my BS. That's when Robbie got pregnant for the first time.

We didn't want to have kids and let someone else raise them, so one of us was going to stay home with the baby. It turned out to be me, in the end, and that's what I've been doing ever since. I do a lot of volunteer work, especially with Boy and Girl Scouts, and I've been doing a little lifeguarding lately; but that's about it.

So anyway, that's me.

The Incantation

We slept in the desert, in blankets on the ground, under a sky so perfectly dark and clear, with stars so brilliant and unblinking that we should have been able to touch them; we slipped into our dre...

First Logged onto Internet: June 1985

I am so tired of reading news articles announcing that Facebook/MySpace/etc. is "no longer just for kids."  Does anybody else remember when only government engineers and scientists used the Internet? ...

Apparently, MySpace has a time limit for keeping old blogs.  Everything before January, 2006, seems to have disappeared.  I'm hoping that bumping some of the old ones up will save them. The smooth, soo...
