NFAR was founded in 2005 to provide new resources for treatment and education related to the growing epidemic of autistic spectrum disorders. NFAR makes an immediate impact on the lives of children with Autism in San Diego county with two grant programs that provide funds to help local organizations and teachers create or expand programs that increase Autism treatment and educational services for children with Autism.
Since 2005, NFAR has awarded more than 96 grants totaling $144,000 throughout the San Diego community for project and pilot studies, as well as educational programs that improve the learning environment for children with autism. Funding for these grants is made possible by the proceeds raised at NFAR’s annual San Diego Race for Autism.
• Once considered rare, Autism is the fastest growing and most common childhood disorder today. It is more prevalent in children than Cancer, Down Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis and Diabetes combined.
• From 1992 to 2002, there was a 2,100 percent increase in Autism cases in the U.S. The incidence rate has jumped from 1 in 2,500 children to 1 in 150.
