About Me

Artist/Fabric designer Marti Schmidt combines ancient art forms with modern impressionism and adds texture, shapes and silhouettes that evoke a style distinctly her own.
Marti's art reflects the tropical ambiance of the pan-Caribbean, the exotic mysticism of the south Pacific, with the infusion of European flavor. The latest modern artwork with its exotic imagery and bold approach to color, draw the viewer into her paintings and leave them with the feeling of having been to those far away places.
Marti has over 30 years of experience in art, design, woodblock printing, silk-screen and various dye and resist techniques, including Batik. Batik is the process of layering molten wax, dyes & pigments to create imagery, color & design. A technique thought to be thousands of years old, first used in China and ancient Egypt, Batik is still practiced in Indonesia, Java, Hawaii, India and other islands all over the world. Marti has perfected her signature style in this medium. Her original Batik paintings and canvases hang in some of the most prestigious homes, resorts, galleries and corporate offices throughout the world.
Her textile and ceramic tile designs are influenced by tropical patterns in the flora and fauna of Florida and the Caribbean, the intricate curves of New Orleans ironwork, Art Deco geometry, Byzantine Mosaics, Chinese watercolor brushwork and Japanese woodblocks.
Marti's custom fabrics from her Islandreams Textiles Collection and original Batiks are featured at the exclusive Biras Creek Resort, a Relais & Chateaux Hotel, nestled in the British Virgin Islands on Virgin Gorda. Her work has also been featured in the Southern Accents Show House (Rosemary Beach, Florida), in the Coastal Living Magazine Idea House ( Carillon Beach, Florida) and in numerous regional, national and international design magazines including Veranda Magazine, Better Homes & Gardens Bedroom & Bath Magazine and Better Homes & Gardens Decorating Magazine and Casa & Estilo International.
