Glynda Velasco has been in the poetry scene since 1994 when she brought the house down at the WORD CORE open mic at Caffe Sienna in Chico, California. She read her poetry on KCSC college radio and KZFR community radio. A week after a salacious literary performance on a small stage at Café Phoenix, the café closed down permanently. She hoped its demise was purely coincidental and not a comment on her work. From her 200 journals and random scrap pieces of paper, she gathered her most personally challenging and revealing work for her first book, Unsent Letters: Selected Poems by Glynda Tejada Velasco (2003, Vallejo Phoenix Rising Collective Press). She was the In-House Poet for Listen & Be Heard Thursdays open mic at Rafael’s in Vallejo, California for a year, meeting new and seasoned poets from all over the Bay Area and the United States. She was the associate editor for the anthology, Environmnetal Terrorists, which was a collection of poems protesting the creation of the Bechtel-Shell liquefied natural gas plant on Mare Island. She was a featured performer at Tongues of Fire: Queer Women Poets of Color at Sacramento State. She hosted the Soul Food poetry open mic and international food court, an event sponsored by the Ethnic Studies Program at Solano Community College. She has also been featured in the Asian Pacific Islander Culture Day at the Fetterly Playhouse in Vallejo in 2007. She is a contributor to many literary magazines and chapbook anthologies including Thrust Magazine, The Mask, Her Own Voice, www.planetAUTHORity.com , Maganda, and Watershed, and Babaylan Speaks (www.meritagepress.com), Every First Tuesdays (2006, Bookworm Press, Hercules, CA) and Yesterdays (2007, Bookworm Press). She currently performs as Q-Tracer at open mics/poetry readings and events throughout northern California.
