In the Capital of the Great White North
Born an Airforce brat in Cold Lake Alberta, I grew up in Ottawa, Baden-Baden Germany, Brighton Ont. Though I still consider Brighton my home town.
45's and Lps were always on my christmas list growing up. My first album was the Ronco Favorite: Good Vibrations, 22 Original Hits. That record was well played. And the collection grew from there. Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Klaatu, Gordon Lightfoot. The ENSS high school music program took it to a whole new level and introduced me to the likes of Gershwin, Sousa and Johnny Mercer. I continued to play in the Trenton Citizens band and later the Brampton Concert Band.
The Brighton high school music program was a great seeding ground of musical talent. It wasn't long after aquiring an electic guitar that I joined a basement band and learned songs by listening to the albums and penning the lyrics by hand. I wrote my first songs.
The second phase started with the forming of the Wiplash band. Gaining notoriety in the basement circuit playing Stones covers and rock and roll, we gradually folded in original material.
Then a friend introduced me to Norm Hacking. If that was what a sing singer songwriter was, then that's what I wanted to do. I traded in the Ibanez for an Acoustic and switched gears. Being an avid reader and a details oriented person, I studied the masters. Lyrics, chord progressions, interviews, How To's, FAQs, theory, I read them all.
It's from this diverse background that I entered my third phase, that of the singer songwriter. I started to write from the heart, writing from within, internalizing, digging deep to find the real feelings. The real meanings. The life experiences, friendship, love and loss.
The result is a suite of personal stories told with an eclectic mix of Americana, Canadiana, west coast pop, unintentional country, blues, and 70's prog rock.
