John Holk & the Sequins

About Me

John Holk, along with his band, The Sequins are part of a new wave of Country-influenced songwriting bands from the post-industrial wastelands of Detroit. Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, John Holk has played bass and sang in dozens of memorable and influential bands that were only recognized for being ahead of their time long after breaking up. These include Billy, The Bucket, Etch-A-Sketch and the Mixolydian Slaves. Inspired by equal parts Hank Williams and Gram Parsons, John Holk seeks to forge a new country-western sound that can co-exist seamlessly with the indie rock aesthetic of Stephen Malkmus and Paul Linklater. A sojourn in Boston, MA saw him playing lots of shows and making great rock records with the classic rock bands Paltrow and Slot Machine from 1997-2002. His band, the Sequins - comprised of Alex Trajano and Katie Grace on drums and bass respectively - are Detroit's hottest new rhythm section. Both contribute heartfelt vocal accompaniment to John Holk's harmony-heavy arrangements. Look for John's Holk's critically-acclaimed first record "Pink Alabaster" at Sequins shows across the state. Together with the Sequins he is working on a new record "Blood Harmony", which should be out in the summer of 2009.
