Sounds Like:
The Royale Brothers (7-song CD, myspace.com/theroyalebrothers) The lyrics on this fun, guitar-driven goth-country band's debut read like Murder Ballads outtakes: "Stuck my pistol underneath his jaw.../Spilled that bastard's blood upon my floor." In fact, the only time vocalist Joey Royale doesn't sound like a murderous Nick Cave is when he's busy sounding like a murderous Johnny Cash. But beyond the sleeve-worn influences, there's a constant rhythmic innovation and ferociousness in the band's dueling, blues-heavy guitar lines.Tyler Theofilos
