I was born in Florence and, after graduating at the National Conservatoire P. Mascagni in Livorno, I continued my studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, where I obtained my Master's Degree in Music Performance and won the 2003 Carlton Granberry Award. During my studies in Ethnomusicology at the University of Bologna, the results of my research on Tarantismo (traditional trance music of South Italy) were published in 'Intense Emozioni in Musica' (1993). Naturally curious, I expanded my knowledge of world music by travelling extensively in Central and South America, where I studied Afro-Cuban and Brazilian percussion and string instruments such as tres, cavaquinho and 7 string guitar. I recently returned from a field trip to The Gambia and Senegal where I was looking into the Wolof drum tradition. Currently studying konakol with mridangam master Sri M Balachandar.
