At the Philadelphia Student Union we believe that one person with a problem is just that, but a lot of people with the same problems can be organized into a movement for change. The Philadelphia Student Union was started by a group of young people who were angry about the low quality of education in their schools and wanted to do something about it. We have been working for ten years to improve public high schools through direct action organizing in our schools, working on campaigns to make sure students get their rights they deserve, to improve school climate and improve relationships between students and teachers, to demand adequate funding for our schools, to demand qualified teachers in every classroom, and to secure more materials and better equiped schools. Currently we have chapters at West Philadelphia High School, Sayre High School, and Masterman High School, and we are developing chapters at CAPA, and Bartram High School. We want to build a movement to change schools, and also a youth movement in the city of Philadelphia and beyond.
