North Charleston, S.C. A tattoo may be the key to finding a dead man's identity. Clues on the body of a John Doe found in north charelston should lead to answers...But ABC News 4 explains why the case is cold...in this week's Carolina Cold Case. The missing identity of a man-that hasn't been reported missing. On July 10, 2005, John Doe was found in this wooded area behind the Dorchester Road Greyhound Bus Station.
Police do not suspect foul play, but no bus ticket and no i.d, left no trace -of where the man was from. "He's very neat, his hair is cut, he has a beard...his mustache well trimmed. His face is shaved, I mean he just did not appear to be a homeless person," says Judy Koelpin of the Charleston County Coroner's Office. If he has a home, the Coroner's office needs help finding it. Doe's fingerprints aren't in the local or national database. Two phone numbers with the names Mom and Dad were in his pant pocket...perhaps a good lead...instead, a dead end. "We attempted to call all area codes by cross referencing the phone numbers all around the country, to see if anybody would match up with them. We had no luck with that," said Koelpin.Koelpin combed a three and a half mile stretch from the bus station to Leeds Ave, stopping at every hotel, business and store, showing John Doe's picture. Koelpin said several people remembered seeing him, but said they'd never spoken to him and had no idea what his name was.Still no name... still no explanation.
The mystery man had several large tattoos on his body. Skulls, werewolves and a wizard cover his entire back. Slayer is scripted near his left shoulder and South of Heaven is written toward at the bottom. A screaming demon was inked across his stomach and this dragon etched on his right arm. The Coroner's Office spoke with a number of people who were well versed in tattoos. No one was able to identify the tattoos or trace them to any particular tattoo artist. Recognizable marks, but the drawings could have been done anywhere. "I'm tired of calling him unknown white male, I really would like to find a family for him right now," said Koelpin.Investigators say he could have had a wallet or I.D. on him at the time of his death, but someone may have stolen it when they first saw the body. Police aren't searching for suspects, they simply want to know -who- John Doe is. If you have ever seen this man or have any information about him, please call Crimestoppers...
