St Johnz Defrosterz Blues Band

About Me

"THE DEFROSTERZ BLUES BAND represents a new breed from the old school of the blues!!! "
Crossing all racial, spiritual, and musical boundaries and pioneering a style that is all their own, blending the ever popular jump swing of the great Kansas city, Texas, and West Coast traditions! At the same time they have not forgotten to remain deeply and firmly rooted in the 40's & 50’s Chicago Blues traditions!

A chance meeting between two fine blues musicians, bassist MARK ST JOHN and keyboardist/harpist/vocalist MIKE MALONE, at a jam session at the world famous HILLSIDE CLUB in Long Beach, Ca in 1992 would change not only their individual destinys, but also begin a cult-type driven scene, and kick-start a 13 year odyssey that would encompass an incredible amount of blues artists, an inumerable amount of blues bars and venues, even more blues aficionados, and the entire North American continent including the incredible blues circuit in CANADA!!.
The DEFROSTERZ BLUES BAND then made blues recording history in April of 1996 when they laid down one of the world's first blues multimedia DVD recordings in Surround Sound, at Sonora Studios in L.A., a state of the art recording facility, technically produced by BOBBY OSINSKI and executive produced by ROLLING STONES ex-guitarist MICK TAYLOR's friend ROBERT PETTERSON! A documented CD with the legendary Texas saxblaster JOE HOUSTON “The Blues and Nothing Else”, was released in September of that year by Shattered Music of Hollywood and soon after Shattered also released the introductory CD “The DEFROSTERZ - TURN THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW” early in 1997 on the same label featuring the group doing extremely original material mostly written by MIKE MALONE that featured JOE HOUSTON as a guest artist on one selection "DADDY ROLLIN' STONE"! The "The Blues and Nothing Else" CD was nominated for a Grammy for Audio production as one of the first 50 ever 'surround sound' audio recordings and then was voted Number ONE Blues Album of the Year 1997 by The L.A. Jazz Times..
The DEFROSTERZ BLUES BAND have toured, recorded, jammed, and worked an average of over 250 gig dates a year over the 13 yrs they appeared together and have covered close to a quarter of a million miles of road touring backing up the legendary Texas saxblaster JOE HOUSTON covering not only the USA but also Internationally. The Defrosterz inimitable live performance abilities and style are truly unique presentations and they undeniably set the standard for a modern blues bands, truly unparalleled and definitive in their own right!
"These guys just might be the best back-up blues band you've ever seen"!!
