Formed in the spring of 2005, Dissentient is epic progressive death metal from Canada's capital! Phill Campbell has been writing since 2002 in various projects of his own. In 2002-2003 he did a solo release under the name "Stygian Fortress". It had a more black metal approach. In 2004 he started adding more of a death metal feel to things and recorded 2 demos under the name Turpitude. Some of these songs were later featured as Dissentient songs.
In the start of 2005, Phill contacted James Mace (of Tribunal at the time, and previously Deamon) to talk about starting a band. The two jammed for about 6 or 7 months before bringing other members. By the end of 2005 the full lineup was complete: Phill Campbell - Guitar/Vocals, James Mace - Drums, Igor Grebenkov - Guitar, and Michelle Gotch (Nihility)- Bass. They did a couple local shows that were well recieved.
In July-August of 2006 Phill and James recorded 11 songs. Phill took the duties of recording all the guitars, bass, vocals, and some synth while James played drums, and synth and was responsible for the mixing and mastering of the upcoming release. Then Phill decided to move to Calgary, AB and the band was on hiatus. It didnt last long...
In the spring of 2007 Phill returned to Ottawa and continued Dissentient. A new bassist joined at that time named Shawn Morissette.
After a couple more shows in the summer, James informed everyone that he was moving to Toronto. The songs that were recorded were not finished the mixing process, so Dissentient independantly released a 7 song demo.
After a year and a half out of the scene, and auditioning several drummers we finally found one that fits. Surprisingly, a very young talented drummer Taylor Calderone. With nearly 9 years of age difference between the rest of the band, this kid can certainly kick some ass. We will be working with him over the next month or two in preperation to come out and play some gigs again soon!
