Add to My Profile | More VideosIn a city known for its hustler's and a highly powerful and influential drug game , Emmanuel “Heatwave†Matovu is making a name for himself in the rap industry and he's doing it out of Vancouver, Canada (otherwise known as “Rain Drop Cityâ€). This is a place with an unexplored and untapped rap scene and Heatwave is poised and prepared to put Rain Drop City on the Billboard charts.
The 20 year old rapper was born in South Africa, raised in Canada and the U.S., and is now ready to make him a home in the rap game. His debut performance in 2006 was to a sold out crowd opening for Juelz Santana. He’s gone on to open for the likes of The Game, Mike Jones, Lupe Fiasco, Chamillionaire, K-OS (2x), Lloyd Banks and Fat Joe. Heatwave made a remarkably smooth transition from the studio to the stage his first time. Crowd response has been overwhelming and Heatwave continues to perfect his craft one show at a time.
It’s hard to believe that, up until a few years ago, the only thing on young Emmanuel’s mind was travelling the U.S. and making a name for himself in basketball. But when he found himself searching out freestyle battles after games, spitting out rhymes that seemed to flow as naturally as the sweat on his face, Heatwave realized he couldn’t just ignore this. As he put it, “I’d join in, dressed in full ball gear, sweaty as hell, and I’d just start spitting. I wasn’t even in a rap mind state at that point but I was killing so-called rappers with no effort or experience.†A raw talent that over the years has become focused and driven, expressing the intensity that comes from being surrounded by hustlers, hoopers, gangsters, drug dealer, producers but most importantly family. This is a rapper with not just talent, but depth, he has a distinctive swagger to his rhymes and performances that can’t be ignored.
With singles like, “Whip It, Whip It†featuring Young Texxus and Sparkdawg, Heatwave shows he’s capable of creating credible street anthem bangers. On both “Swagger†featuring P. Jericho and the lyric driven street track “Bubblin’ N’ Shitâ€â€, Heatwave proves his versatility on the mic and is focused and determined on conquering the unforgiving American Hip-hop world. With a new mixtape called “Rookie of the Year†coming out in February 2007 and five more in the works, 2007 is the year of the Heatwave. This is one artist who refuses to be put into the Canadian Rapper mold and plans on making a serious impact on the U.S. music industry and abroad, all while repping Canada.
Heatwave is part of a large movement on the West Coast of Canada and the US called the “B.L.O.C.K.S.T.A.R.S.†(Black Leaders Overcoming Criticism with the Knowledge to Succeed Through All Restrictions, S.t.a.r.s.). The movement consists of 300 plus members throughout Vancouver, Seattle and Los Angeles that use their size and talents to get involved in everything from music to charity. Heatwave describes his affiliation with the group by saying, “I’m Heatwave thru and thru but I rep S.t.a.r.s. everywhere I go. It’s just as much a part of me as this rap stuffâ€.
With the combination of gritty, natural talent and unfailing loyalty to his grind and hustle, Heatwave is poised to mature quickly in the rap world. Currently Heatwave has been travelling and getting some business done. He recently got back from Atlanta where he recorded at the infamous So So Def studios with up and comer rapper Young Capone. He just recently flew back from the NYC where he really was able to show his true colours. Watch for a few collabs with some NYC cats. Finally, Heatwave is in the last stages of preparing to shoot for his "Nice As Me" video shoot. Heatwave hopes to make this video a classic as he feels that the industry's video game has gone way done (besides a fraction of what's put out).Heatwave is planning to really step up his musical creativity over the next few months. And if he's a problem now, this industry better be careful once Heatwave comes out of the lab. Heatwave is more focused than ever and he wants everyone to know that 2007 and 2008 are the breeding grounds for a star to be born.
