About Me

I've been playing bass since 1976, I'm self-taught and have played fretless basses almost exclusively throughout my career, including 4-string, 8-string and 12-string fretlesses. I was the sole 4x3 fretless 12-string bassist in the world for nearly seven years.
Currently I'm the owner/editor of the 12-string bass website at www.12stringbass.net. Over the last five years I've been fortunate to have interviewed prominent players like Tom Petersson and Pete Comita (Cheap Trick), Tim King (Soil), Jamie Hunting (David Lee Roth, Vince Neil), Richard Savoie (Eonz) and Dave Henning (Big Wreck), as well as guitar builders like Jol Dantzig (Hamer) and Mick Donner (Dean). More fun stuff is in the works!
A guitarist dubbed me "Surf Rat" because he thought I looked like a California beach bum. The name stuck, now many people just know me as "Surf".
I've played the smallest backwoods bars to events attended by prominent people such as England's Prince William. Rock is preferred but I've played a lot of country music too; there is a lot of good crossover country on the charts right now.
I'm a co-producer of the "Overkill Is Just Enough" 12-string bassists collection which was just released. If you have ever been curious about the capabilities of the 12-string bass then this is the album for you!
