About Me

Back after a brief but exciting hiatus I find myself once again turning to sites such as myspace to liven up my social life, albeit with a fresh start.
While navigating this minefield of convincing whoever has happened upon my profile that I am worth their time without sounding like a braggart or someone stuck in the doldrums of chain emailing anyone in his zip code, I'd like to point out that I tend towards witty banter, over analysis, and the pursuit of new experiences more then drinking, partying, or the comfort of a rut.
As a side note, and a fun fact, I looked up rut to make sure I had spelled it correctly, and it turns out that it has two, impressively different definitions:
1) A usual, fixed practice: a monotonous routine.
2) An annually recurrent state of sexual excitement in the male deer; broadly: sexual excitement in a mammal especially when periodic.
Honest, no kidding, go look it up for yourself. I assure you, I was referring to the first, although the second does sound more comforting. This is not where I saw this profile heading when I started down this path.
Anyways, I'm not looking for Mrs. Right, or Mrs. Right Now, mostly I'm looking for fun cool people that I can make plans with on the weekends. Intelligent, opinionated, independent, stubborn? We'd get along swimmingly. I'm also the recent proud owner of a rescue greyhound, so dog lovers are welcome as well.
Some things we may have in common, or at least serve as a healthy groundwork for a few conversations; I have been taking ballroom lessons for over a year now, I am a board game fanatic, and will happily recommend some games for you to try, if I haven't seen a movie that you really liked already, I will go out of my way to see it so that we can discuss it. I'm also agnostic, fairly liberal, and very open minded. I think that covers the main bases.
I also have been recently on a mission of throwing together some sort of activity group for young professionals in the south bend area. I'm thinking just a group of people that get together on weekends to do fun stuff that you can't always do with just one or two friends, like a pickup soccer match, or an organized golf outing, or some ultimate frisbee, etc. Basically, a fun way to meet people and do cool things that doesn't involve signing up or committing to a long schedule. If anyone reading this has interest in that, let me know!
UPDATE: I've made a Google Group to keep track of anyone interested in the south bend activities group.

My Interests

My interests are wide and varied. At a high level, movies, music, books, you know, the usual. I also really enjoy game, of all kinds. I can't think of a time where I wasn't happy to play a card game, or board game, or social game like mafia, or video game, or pool, or bowling, you name it, I'm willing to give it a try. Aside from all that, I'm interested in getting to know people on all levels. Late night conversations that span everything from childhood to road rage are my delicate treats and I seek them out wherever I may find them.

I'd like to meet:

Cool people around town that love to play games!

Music:

I pretty much like it all, although I'm not wild about country. Yes yes, I know, I've got a cowboy hat on in my picture, but headwear does not musical tastes indicate! I enjoy music in general, and as a result, tend to like the best examples of any given genre, whether it’s folk rock, rap, techno, gospel, barbershop, alternative, industrial, jazz, or even classical. I appreciate the soulful simplicity of just a man, a guitar, his voice, and his passionate woes, just as well as the intricate complexity of the Blue Man Group’s several hand made sound machines. For specific artist, just a taste of what I like would include; Incubus, Maroon 5, Coldplay, Audioslave, John Legend, Tenacious D, Jack Johnson, The Fugees, Simon and Garfunkel, Jason Mraz, Dispatch, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, anything A'Cappella

Movies:

I used to be a bit more of a movie snob then I am now. I love movies, of all kinds, but typically my favorites are outside the norm. The latest horror flick is a good excuse to cuddle and all, but give me an artistic, well performed drama that has underlying complexity and intelligence to it and causes you to walk out of the theatre feeling like you had witnessed something moving and incredible any day. But sometimes it’s hard to beat a well placed fart joke. Some of my favorite movies include: American Beauty, Amelie, The Big Lebowski, Beautiful Girls, Almost Famous, Labyrinth, Fight Club, Closer, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Serenity, Hero, Kill Bill, Lost In Translation, Punch Drunk Love, Secretary, Sneakers, and Raising Arizona, just to name a few.

Television:

I am amongst the ranks of those who have been too pampered by modern technology to enjoy live TV. Almost everything I watch is Tivoed or from the DVD compilation ;) For just casual tv time, I tend to leave the food network on because I love to cook and I think it’s fascinating. I appreciate Adult Swim just as much as the next guy, but I also have a place near to my heart reserved for Good Eats :P Other favorite shows include: Monk, Family Guy, Lost, Myth Busters, Scrubs, The West Wing, and Def Poetry.

Books:

I enjoy reading very much, and always have a book I’m working on, but I’m an annoyingly slow reader, so I tend to wait until someone has personally recommended a book to me before I will devote any attention to it. I tend to enjoy sci-fi and fantasy, not so much for the sci-fi and fantasy though, that’s just been where a lot of my favorite authors have chosen to devote their time. I really like good writing, the ability to paint a scene or the ability to design a plot that is gripping and entertaining. I’ve finally started to branch out from my sci-fi and fantasy shackles, but I return to them often. Some of my favorite authors include: Neil Gaiman, Orson Scott Card, Neil Stephenson, and David Sedaris, Augusten Burroughs. Oh, also, don’t think me a high and mighty book zealot, I love me some Harry Potter too ;)

Heroes:

All the typical ones ;) My parents have been married for 37 years and doing strong, and they still love and support each other and their children, which seems pretty rare lately.
