David Power was born of a musical family in County Waterford. He played the whistle from a young age, and at 10 was encouraged to take up the uilleann pipes by Jim Horgan, Area Music Teacher with the Vocational Educational Committee.He took his first lessons with the renowned Waterford piper Tommy Kearney for a number of years and thereafter had tuition with Jimmy O’Brien Moran, Willie Reynolds, Breandán Breathnach, Ronan Browne, MacDara MacDonncha and Peter Carberry. Influenced also by Seamus Ennis, Tommy Reck, Felix Doran and Leo Rowsome, David won the Senior All-Ireland Piping Championship and the coveted Oireachtas Piping competitions in 1992. He represented Ireland at the Lorient Interceltic Festival the following year.He was a member of Liam Clancy’s ‘Fairweather Band’ in the early 90’s and belonged to the group ‘Gorumna’ who toured Europe and Asia later in the 90’s. He researched, compiled, edited and produced a substantial recording and historical biography of his mentor Tommy Kearney which was released commercially by Na PÃobairà Uilleann under their Master Pipers series and has regularly performed at the Uilleann Piping Showcase Concert of the Willie Clancy Summer Festival, Milltown Malbay, Co. Clare.In 2003 he moved to the United States and played the pipes in the off-Broadway production of Roger Gillen’s ‘Love’s Pure Light’, recorded piping and whistle music for the Irish Repertory Theatre’s staging of ‘The Field’ and was a member of the cast of the acclaimed recent Broadway production of Eugene O’Neill’s ‘A Touch of the Poet’, starring Gabriel Byrne in which he directed, recorded and performed all music for the show.His seminal debut solo recording ‘My Love is in America’ was released on the prestigious Claddagh record label to much acclaim in 2005 and was the subject of an interview with Myles Dungan on RTE’s Rattlebag in 2006. Claddagh will be releasing his second solo recording in January 2007.David makes regular radio and television appearances in Ireland and abroad, he has performed on stage with stalwarts of Irish traditional music including Martin Hayes, Tony MacMahon, Tommy Peoples and he regularly performs solo piping concerts in the United States and Canada.
