Rory Dempsey is a freelance bass player living in London. Shortly after taking up the double bass at the age of 16, Rory enrolled in the BMus degree course at the Cork School of Music and graduated with 1st class honours in June of 2004.
While studying in Cork, Rory became a part of the musical furniture playing both double bass and electric bass in many bands such as trip-hop 12 piece The Shades, energetic live house act Cartoon, self labelled ‘grit-folk’ collective The Girls of Summer, and jazz/funk trio Agent Smith to name a few.
In September of 2004, armed with a meaningless piece of paper in his left arse pocket, Rory gathered a few personal affects and a bass or two and jumped on a London bound bus. There he studied at the Royal College of Music for a spell, and emerged with a Postgraduate Diploma in Performance focussing on classical music.
Currently he (by ‘he’ I mean ‘me’. Let’s face it, it’s me writing this really isn’t it. I’m not famous enough to have someone else writing about me…are you?) runs his bass operation from a lovely big house in South East London. At present business is very varied, ranging from jazz duos to 120 piece orchestras, from West End shows to symphonic repertoire and all manner of beast in between.
He is also a member of The Bones of Cork, Ireland’s eh, finest 5 trombone and rhythm section band. They play jazz standards and originals arranged by some of the UK’s top writers.

While paying the bills playing the music of others, Rory is also involved in several other projects that have original music as their focus……
THE CHUCKLE DEMOGRAPHIC is a collaborative project headed up by Rory. It’s style can be anything from drum n’ bass to house to dub reggae. Its members include musicians he respects, and a new-fangled ‘computer machine’. This project is mainly the result of staying up too late. Have a listen…
