About Me

Hello World. I have been playing guitar for more than 43 years. I have called Lubbock, TX home on and off for more than 35 years. I lived in Houston for 14 years before my wife, Katy, and I returned to Lubbock where we have made our home ever since. I have traveled most of the 50 states performing on my guitar with several touring bands before I worked on a degree in Marketing from Texas Tech University. In my touring years I opened up for many people including James Brown, Firefall, Gatemouth Brown, and Christopher Cross, and Eric Johnson. Since then I have found myself peforming almost every weekend with a multitude of players here in Lubbock including Mike Pritchard, the late Gary Hurt, Steve Williams, John Sprott, Darren Welch, Jessie Ballew, Mike Carraway, Cary Banks, Hot Foot Toby, Danny Dukatnik, Jimmie Mason, Joe Don Davidson, Mike Boyd, Brad Green, Phillip Brown, Jeff Nicholson, and Greg Hodges, Greg Goodnight, Andy Wilkinson, Ron Riley, Sean Frankhouser, Kyle Abernathy, Anna Ruth Despain, Terry Fite, and too many more to remember or mention. I play guitar in many different styles although I love the acoustic folk/rock/jazz sound the most. I am currently playing with 3 different bands. Hat Trick is my acoustic three piece vocal band. We do alot of Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, and America. If it has 3 part vocals, we do it. The CapRockers are my electric Country Rock group. This is a great 5 piece dance band featuring the Eagles and Clapton. The MP5 is a new band that I have joined with my buddy Mike Pritchard. We do all our favorite blues and rock. If you are in the Lubbock area, I do invite you to come out to any of our shows and join in the fun. I am working at South Plain College where I teach guitar during the day and play music at night. I love you all for checking out this site. If I can ever be a help to you, please feel free to contact me. Thanks to my buddy Wayne Burrell (a singer/songwriter) for turning me on to this site. Peace out and God bless to you all. Mark Wallney

Band Members: The Hat Trick (Mike Boyd, Mike Pritchard and Mark Wallney) Here is a great band that I work with called Hat Trick. We started out in 2005 as just a three piece acoustic folk/rock band. We specialized in 3 pc harmonies. We perform everything from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to the Beatles, America, Simon and Garfunkel, Eagles and the like. This vocal laden ensemble has transformed into a bigger sound with Mike Boyd moving to bass guitar and adding the human metronome, Mr. Bobby McDowell, on drums. We still work occasionally as just a three piece, but we are able to really open up with this new rythum section. We are the only band like us in our home of Lubbock, TX. Come out and see us when we are in your area. This is the CapRockers from Lubbock, TX. We are high energy Southern/Rock with a Country edge to our music. Here is a great dance band. You will hear everything from The Eagles and Robert Earl Keen to Free and Clapton. In order is Greg Hodges on Bass Guitar, Mark Wallney on lead guitar, Phillip Brown on drums, Brad Green keyboards and Hammond B3 and Jeff Nickelson on rhythm guitar. This motley crue is the MP5 Band. Classic Blues/Rock. A band to party with. In order (left to right) is Jimmie Mason on bass guitar, Mike Pritchard on lead vocal, Bobby McDowell on drums, Mark Wallney on lead guitar, and Joe Don Davidson on lead guitar.Peace, Mark Wallney

The Hat Trick Live at The South Plains Fair in Lubbock, TX 2008 Mark Wallney-Lead Guitar and Vocal, Mike Pritchard-harmonica and vocal, Mike Boyd-Bass and vocal, and Bobby McDowell on drums.
Influences: I was raised on a steady diet of Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash and certainly Neil Young. Steve Stills guitar playing has always spoke to me expecially the open tunings in E and D that he uses on the acoustic. Songwriters like Donald Fagen had inspired me for years. I am always blown away by the sophistication of chord changes and voicing he uses. The heart found in Steve Earl is hard to compare. There is a softness to to Dan Folgelberg that I have tried to add to my music and let me also recognize the hit maker Steve Miller. I just love this guy. His rock is just laced with a blues undertone I hope to use.
