About Me

Please check out my website, www.dominicanwriters.com, an attempt to collect a selection of exerpts from and critical appraisals about Dominican authors. Scant attention has been paid to them and yet a genuine corpus of work has been created by Dominicans, especially since the end of the dictatorship in 1961.Previously, academics and critics have tended to ignore the island's writers due to it being in Spanish and not accessible, or not fulfilling the generalised themes that are prevalent to the Caribbean area as a whole. This has lead to Dominican writers struggling to find themselves published (along with social attitudes on the island itself) and yet without readers there are no writers and without writers there are no readers. The only way this situation may improve is to promote the island's literature which has produced some incredible writers such as Aida Cartagena Portalatin, Jeannette Miller, Emilia Pereyra, Carmen Imbert Brugal, Pedro Peix, Pedro Mir and Virgilio Diaz Grullon to name but a few. And the women writers, even more ignored, are just as interesting. This is extended to musicians and artists too, who all have made an impact but fail to be recognised...a href="http://www.freecodesource.com"
The website is back up and running so please check it out. Any of your own stories, essays, etc. are always welcome or comments about the writers and their stories all help. I am in the process of putting more examples in English and Spanish on the site, so keep checking back! The only way to promote Dominican writers is to know about them and then spread the word.

General discussion on Dominican writers

Surely somebody has come across a Dominican writer or two (even if it is Julia Alvarez)?
