Andy Russell, born Andres Rabago in Boyle Heights -the coolest area of East Los Angeles, was a true Chicano music pioneer. He began his career as a drummer, but his talent and his looks helped him become a popular singer. He entered the charts in 1943 with the hit "Besame Mucho."

It is hard to think of Doug Sahm as anything other than Chicano. Early on in life he was bestowed the title of honorary Chicano by his Tejano bothers, they used to tell him that he acted Mexican. He even went by the name Douglas Saldaña. This is a very early and rare clip of the Sir Douglas Quintet playing "She is About a Mover." Sporting a Beatle hair cut is none other than Augie Mayers. He learned his love for conjunto music from his father, approaching his Vox organ playing the way conjunto musicians play bajo sexto. The Sir Douglas Quintet always had Chicanos as band members. Doug Sahm can be credited with introducing Flaco Jimenez to non Tejano music fans. Doug Sahm, Freddy Fender, Augie Mayers and Flaco Jimenez joined forces in the nineteen eighties to create Los Texas Tornados.
