To quote Scott T Cummings, “What is music? Why is music? What does music mean?â€. I add “How am I blinded by something which I can not see?â€â€¦ Music is my big, unexplainable void and my lifelong struggle. (Oh, and where does it exist again?)
I grew up in a very musical household. There isn’t one moment in my childhood that I can’t relate to an exact song. A lot of time was spent staring up, mouth gaping, at the skyscrapers of records that my equally as skyscraper-like Dad owned and listening with open, inquisitive child’s ears the sounds of Jazz, Fusion, Reggae, Soul, 60s and 70s Rock & Pop, Blues, African music...I think that this is where my want for an authenticity, in both the music that I play and the music that I hear comes from. I grew up with THE shit, not the mould that is growing on that shit.
I played and learned throughout my youth, not ever really sure whether I wanted to play, dance or act…classical ballet, tv and movies have all been parts of my reality for periods of time so far, but I realised sometime in 2000 that all I really wanted to do was PLAAAAAAYYYYYY!!
So, I brought my degree in Contemporary Dance to a standstill, gave my dance/drama school away and started collaborating with a man called Dan and making music for people to dance to! One day, Dan called and told me that he had won a big competition called ‘Unearthed’ (run by Radio station Triple J) and so he put a band together for the gigs…Yeah! My first gigs! At Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion in front of about a thousand people!
Anyway…a lot of gigging, life experience and wonder finally brought me to Lismore, which I am unashamedly in love with (it smells like smoke and trees), and to Southern Cross University, with a Bachelor of Music degree.
I played up there with a lot of great, wonderful, silly, large and small people including Jim Kelly, Dave Sanders, Steve Russell, Matt Smith, Thierry Fossemalle, Mitch Carey, Natalie Gay, Dave Addes, Greg Lyon, Sonia Leeson, Sarah Martyn, Tommee and the Neighbourhood, Zoe Kalenderides… people like that and so many more.
Last year I went to the land of definitive words, JAPAN, for the 2nd time. Both times due to my being a member of a cappella group, 'Isabella A Cappella'! We toured all over the country both times, playing in any number of weird and wonderful places. Oh my god, Tokyo. I haven't yet come up with a word to describe Tokyo...maybe wowamazicalogodiricalisticolourful? Anyway, I digress...
Due to the love of my life, my wife and awesome partner in crime being German, I spend a lot of time in Germany, where I am currently residing. I'm playing with some truly inspirational musicians (Felix Elsner and Ilka Seidenburg) and looking for more and more inspiration with every day that I'm awake. Currently on the trip of trying to understand the German music scene!!! Very organised for this little black duck.
