Influences:
Music:
Too diverse and numerous to mention. This month it's been Aussie hip hop all the way, a la Butterfingers and After Hours. I also love the Dresden Dolls, Spiral Tribe, the Eastman Wind Ensemble (conducted by the legendary Fred Fenell) Lawnmower Deth, The Living End and NOFX but also getting into Steve Reich. His 'different trains' album is stunning! Zappa and Beefheart are great - Bongo Fury has a very special place in my heart! Also, Bela Emerson and Oren Marshall do amazing things with orchestral instruments and electronic effects. Otherwise.. you'll find me listening to drum & bass, nuskool breaks, afrobeat, gamelan, bebop, Aussie hip-hop, ska, punk, avant-garde brass music, interesting 20th century string quartets, Russian revolutionary orchestral music...
Movies:
I'm going through a documentary phase at the moment. These films are definitely a must-see: No Volveran, Who killed the electric car, An Inconvenient Truth, the John Safran vs God series, Steal this Film, Theremin - an electronic odyssey and the making of dark side of the moon. I'm also slowly getting through some animated shorts and film noir classics. The Long Sleep is awesome! Older favourites: Orgazmo, Baraka, Whale Rider, Secretary, Cutting Up My Friends, A Grindhouse Romance, Clerks, Amelie, The Castle, Shortbus, Ferris Buellers Day Off, Edward Scissorhands.
Television:
I try to avoid television as much as I can, but I fall victim to: Heroes, Dr Who, Torchwood, Tipping the Velvet, Futurama, Neighbours (embarrassingly!).
Books:
Understanding Power - Noam Chomsky, Among the Bohemains - Virginia Nicholson, Reefer Madness - Eric Schlosser, Stephen Fry & Anne McCaffrey's novels for escapism and great stories.
Dislikes (in no particular order):
Having to choose between two such geographically distant countries; people that will not work through problems; propensity to pigeonhole; bullies; narrow minds; marmite; rampant capitalism; art that isn't challenging or creative ; people who do not challenge themselves; smooth or lite jazz (Jamie Cullen etc. has a lot to answer for - jazz is supposed to be raw, edgy and energetic, not something to send you to sleep); violence; power-trippers...
Sounds Like: It's a bit quirky and somewhat odd.
Depending on my mood and the people i'm playing with, it could be jazz, avantgarde, indie, noise, ska, funk, reggae, lounge-core, ultra-cheese... ;0)
My latest toys are looping and multi-effects pedals, so i've mostly making silly noises and looping them. I've been recording purely vocal tunes with the looper too, which surprises me as I generally avoid singing. Maybe my voice is maturing in my old age... i guess something has to and it sure isn't my mind!
