About Me

SCREEN 3 - SEVEN DAYS - Norwich band performing in mid-eighties

Add to My Profile | More Videos Myspace Backgrounds I've decided that I'm still in the Cas Carnaby Five even though we haven't performed together for 16 years, I formed the band with Tom Smith and as we never officially split up I'm still in the band! As I rarely perform these days I'm more of a composer and songwriter - oh and teacher (which takes up all my time and prevents me from performing!) I have been in bands though since the late 70's, here is a brief journey: School bands with mates with names and line ups that changed monthly/weekly - 'The Scratby Assassins', 'Dark Ages', 'Dancing Light', 'The Ache'. I then became a member of Screen 3 (www.myspace.com/screen3norwichuk) - a top Norwich band of the early '80's who were signed to epic and toured with Elvis Costello, Level 42 Teardrop Explodes and Madness to name but a few. We released 5 singles with limited success, recorded 2 sessions for John Peel and one for 'Kid' Jenson. Ran out of steam in '84 but had great fun and fond memories. Short time with 'The Children of the Revolution' (light relief from Screen 3 with bizarre covers). More serious pop followed with 'Big & Beautiful' (if you can be serious with a name like that!) with Neil from Screen 3. Discovered Tom Waits (a relatioship that's still going strong) and became disillusioned with pop. Formed the Cas Carnaby Five with Tom Smith (Gee Mr Tracey) and made an album for Back's records in Norwich (Mr Morris' Funeral) which is amongst my best achievements having written it with Tom or on my own. It was co-produced by the engineer in the studio - a young Owen Morris (Oasis, Ash, Verve) and still sounds good - I think. Cas Carnaby LP tracks and demos are among the music being played on this site. The band folded in 1990 and I drifted, musically, went to France for a bit, Dj'd (something I've done since '78 but more your cheesy dj than mix master) got married and had kids. I took a change of direction in '97 when I did a degree in Music at the UEA in Norwich where I majored in composition and wierd electroacoustic composition. This opened my ears to all sorts of new, and very old, music which affects what I compose now (along with the influence of records I used to hear on John Peel's show in the late '70's /early '80's). While at the UEA I played trumpet on tracks for 'Taxi' - dance outfit and wrote string arrangements for Angelou's album ' While You Were Sleeping' I am now a teacher at a high school in Norwich and love it but it doesn't give me much time to play music so I'm hoping to put some of my music 'out there' using myspace. I compose at the piano, guitar and computer and I'll try to regularly rotate what goes on the playlist.
