The History: Long before Jah Lion was created DJ Skully Roots and a group of friends, mainly from the Southampton Street area of Reading, had started a small party set when the crew from another Reading sound President came to listen to them. The President crew liked what Skully Roots and his friends were playing and asked them to join their sound, which they did. After President disbanded the sounds set was handed down and was later to become known as Raiders. As Raiders developed and moved into the dancehall era Skully Roots stuck with his love of roots music and over time he and his brother DJ Gadget gradually built up a new sound, that sound went under the name of Aces and held a residency at Dukes (formerly Nino's) in Reading.
After a break in playing out Skully Roots started up again under the name The Original Jah Lion along with Akuji Warrior who now builds exclusive dubs for Jah Lion. The Original Jah Lion played all over the area including memorable dances like those held at the Malcolm X Centre in Bristol and Plus 1 club in Swindon where they played alongside the roots sound Messenjah. Skully Roots has also teamed up with Shanks from Bass-Bin under the name of Basslion and held a residency at Club Bay as well as taking their music to the south of France playing to the local people who loved what they heard. Now the sound is back again under the name Jah Lion and can be heard every other Saturday night at their residency in Reading's Cafe Iguana between 8 and 2AM and the last Friday of every month at the Tap & Spile in Newbury
"Now you see, for Jah Lion things are stepping up because of Idrens such as I-Natural from I'N'I Oneness/Solomonic Roots (from Leeds), Jah Red Eye (Southend), Mark Mystyk (Newbury) and The UK Players (Salisbury). It is these Idrens who have supported and pushed the name of Jah Lion where now some of the bigger sounds from up north like Jah Yabbys and Iration Steppas have heard our dub plates and are asking us for some. True, in terms of boxes, amps and other dub plates we still have some way to go yet, but we are not in a big hurry as all of this takes plenty of money and time to accumulate. I personaly feel that playing at smaller venues creates a bigger vibe, because you see, we deal with a oneness vibe. I don't really favour clash dances, I like a dance where even if two or three sounds are playing, we all play to keep the people and that special vibe going, and we could be playing nothing but dub plates all night!!
And the story continues, during 2003 -5 Jah Lion Movement started to take flight playing regularly at Club Roots,The Sun Rooms in Southend, the get together festival in Henley On Thames,The Bang Bar and also in Cornwall.
Jah guidance and blessings to everyone checking this page and reading about Jah Lion!Bless, Skully Roots"
