BIOGRAFI
START OF CAREER
M.Nasir began his career in the artistic and music scene after obtaining his diploma in Western Painting from The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, in Singapore, in 1978. At that time, he was much involved in writing lyrics and acting in plays. It was while singing with a local band, that he attracted the attention of En. Wan Ibrahim, the then Executive Producer of Polygram Singapore, who introduced him to the record company. From there he began his foothold in the malay music industry.
FIRST HIT SONG
His very first lyric ‘Senandung Semalam’, to song composed by Wan Ibrahim, was a hit which brought fame to Alleycats, a popular band during that time. Confident of his response towards his compositions, he began to compose songs, his first song being ‘Hujan’ for the rock group Sweet Charity. His compositions contained in Alleycats’ album, proved hits with the listeners, with hits like ‘Andainya aku pergi dulu’, ‘Hingga akhir nanti’, ‘Setahun sudah berlalu’, ‘Kerana Kau’, and each album fetched more than 50,000 sales, the highest recorded sale in Malaysia, then.
His first song ‘Kenangan Lalu’ sung by Flybaits, another popular band at that time, introduced and popularized the band into the music scene. This song has also been covered and popularized in Tagalog in the Philippines., and also in Cantonese by a popular Taiwanese singer, Teresa Teng.
SINGER
As a singer, he started in 1981 when he was given the opportunity to record his debut album ‘Untuk Pencinta Seni’. However, it was not very successful as the album fulfilled more of his taste rather than the listeners.
He then set up a group ‘Kembara’ and was the genius behind the songs which introduced a new era, ‘communal folk song’ in the Malay music scene. Popular songs like ‘Ekspres Rakyat’ which depicted the society, became a whistling tune among the teenagers and adults. With Kembara, he recorded 7 albums, the last being the songs from his debut film, ‘Kembara Seniman Jalanan’ in 1985 in which he was the lead actor. The group then split up and each went their own direction.
He then decided to return to the studio as a solo singer in 1990 and he recorded his first album under PMC, which is now known as Sony BMG Music (M) Sdn Bhd.
‘SOLO’ the title of the album, was a fusion of contemporary and traditional music. ‘Mustika’, the hit song, paved the way for ‘Malay music’ or ‘lagu-lagu melayu’ as he wish it to be known.
‘Saudagar Mimpi’ the title of his second album, also reached platinum with songs like ‘Apokalips’, ‘Inang Pulau Kencana’.
His third album ‘Canggung Mendonan’ or ‘Awkward Stranger’ hit the market early 1994, has received good response and achieved platinum. ‘Mentera Semerah Padi’ and ‘Bonda’ are some of the songs that hit the local charts.
In 1994, he was awarded ‘The Most Popular Male Artiste’, Anugerah Bintang Popular organised by media Berita Harian.
In 1996, BMG Music (M) released the live recording of his ‘Konsert Akar’ which was staged at PWTC, Album was well received with sales of 50,000 units.
On 27 April 1998, ‘Terbaik M.Nasir’ was released with a compilation of 10 songs from his previous albums ‘SOLO’, ‘Saudagar Mimpi’ and ‘Canggung Mendonan’ and 2 new bonus track ‘Kias Fansuri’ and Andalusia. Albums selling well with sales almost reaching 25,000 untis.
In Sept 1999, he released another album titled “Srikandi Cintaku” a compilation of 10 of his best compositions made popular by Search, Awie, Alleycats, Hattan and many more. This album which was also said as an album to commemorate his late wife was recorded in his own style with fresh recording and new arrangement. One of the most excellent track, ‘Srikandi Cintaku’ has been arranged and sung with “keroncong mood” compared to the original ballad rock sung by popular local group Bloodshed.
In his move to penetrate the international market, he has just signed up with Warner Music (M) Sdn Bhd, where an international album is expected to be released. At the domestic side, he has just released his latest album “Phoenix Bangkit” his first solo album under that label. The album with hit “Raikan Cinta” is an album with Eastern influenced tunes album sold more than 20,000 copies within barely 2 weeks of its release, undoubtedly a positive indication that this is one of his best albums.
Meanwhile, his previous record label BMG Music (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has also released an album titled “Prahara Seni Abadi M.Nasir” on 14 June 2001, a compilation album with 2 new songs “Dalam” and “Walid”, which he collaborated with Brad Parker, American composer.
In November 2003, M.Nasir came out with a compilation album titled “Mentera Semerah Padi” with a new fresh recording of his song Mentera Semerah Padi which was a duet with the rock band Spider.
Recently, M.Nasir has just released his new album ‘Sang Pencinta’ in May 2006. ‘Juwita Citra Terindah’ is a very popular song in this album.. All songs in this album are 100% composed by M.Nasir with Lyrics by Loloq/M.Nasir.
PERFORMER
Although his music is ethnically inclined, it is well received judging not only from the response towards his albums but also to his solo concerts. Turnouts to concerts ‘Gong Impian’ at MCA Hall in 1992, ‘Konsert Mentera’ over TV3 on 19 February 1993 and ‘Konsert Canggung’ at Stadium Negara on 29 July 1995 were just overwhelming. His concerts which are fused with theatrical abstracts received positive reviews from the media and fans. Hence, proved his versatility as a performer.
Once again, his concert titled “Konsert Akar M.Nasir - Manifestasi Akustika” held on 26 October 1995 at PWTC was a sell-out and won great reviews from the public and media. His concert which combined 15 local musicians and 12 strings players from Philipines, was considered Concert of the Year by Utusan Malaysia, a daily newspaper..
His concert in Manchester, named M.NASIR CROSSING UK’97 proved his versatility in working with a small group of musicians in an acoustic concert. The music which was arranged traditionally was well received by the audience.
In August 1999, Konsert GEMBALA M. Nasir was staged before a venue-packed audience at Harbour Pavillion, World Trade Centre Singapore. This sold out concert is his first solo concert in Singapore since his starting career as a singer in 1980 and was described as “Concert of The Year 1999” by the local media.
On 29 January 2000, ANDALUSIA M. Nasir Concert at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur was staged. This concert described as “the opening concert” for the new millenium was the first done with an orchestra in an open stage venue. The concert also introduced for the first time ticketing system using smart cards.
On 21 October 2001, “Konsert Phoenix M.Nasir” was staged at Suntec City, Singapore. This concert was his 2nd concert in Singapore and has gained great reviews from the fans and media. During the concerts, he performed songs from his latest album “Phoenix Bangkit” and hits from his previous albums. In “Konsert Phoenix”, he was accompanied by 11 musicians, 3 back up vocals and 3 guest performers including his brother (Zoul) who was also a former member of Kembara.
He has held many other concerts after that as well as busy performing in annual dinners.
PRODUCER
His interest in producing began after he handled the vocal production for Alleycats and Flybaits. He co-produced the album ‘Alleycats 4’ and was then offered to be the in-house producer for Polygram Singapore.
From 1981 to 1984, he produced pop albums for artistes under the label of Polygram Records. He began to be known as a ‘rock’ composer after he produced the album for ‘Search’, the then and currently is, the most popular rock group in Malaysia. His ‘rock’ compositions proved hits as they were shockingly different from other rock songs. Popular hits were ‘Cinta Buatan Malaysia’, ‘Langit & Bumi’. ‘Fantasia Bulan Madu’ attracted foreign hearts when it was recorded in Tagalog, Mandarin and Indonesian versions.
He then became a free-lance producer and produced many albums for artistes, Wings, Search, Bumiputera Rockers, Ilusi, Anita Sarawak, Sharifah Aini, Awie, Ruhil, Hattan, Rahim Maarof, Kris, each having a hit song to their credits.
He recently completed production for Sharifah Aini, Deja Moss, Umie Aida, Kopratasa and currently producing 3 song Search.
And with his own recording studio ‘Studio Ronggeng’ set up since 1992, he has been able to meet more demand by recording companies.
Currently still active producing albums for well known artistes and new artistes like Mawi, Felix, Quest and many more.
ACTOR
His acting career, which stemmed from his early theatre days, began with his debut film, ‘Kembara Seniman Jalanan’, a film against record piracy which brought up many controversies.
Following that, was the leading role in ‘Fenomena’ which hit the box office, ‘Selubung’, ‘Balada’, ‘Simfoni Duniaku’ and “MERAH” in which he directed as well and has also recorded success. The latest being lead actor in the Malaysian most expensive film, ‘Puteri Gunung Ledang’.
Other leading roles were in television dramas ‘Novel Untuk Atika, ‘Alina’, ‘Kopi, gula & Teh’, ‘Senyuman Seorang Seniman’ among many others. Besides acting in movies, he is also involved in the TV dramas which were blockbusters such as Hambali Seorang Jenderal, Ilhamku and latest being a 24 series drama “Salam Taj Mahal” which was shot in New Delhi, India.
